RPI Question

At this point it doesn’t really matter, we are in. But, I’m curious how RPI is calculated and hoping someone with more knowledge could help. After LSU beat Kentucky they jumped to 21 in RPI, however, they are 24th after advancing and beating USCe. What impacted that negatively?

Strength of schedule is the biggest factor in the RPI. So other games will constantly affect our RPI, as long as our previous opponents are still playing.
Also I’m not sure where people were seeing 21. D1 Baseball shows us at #23, up from #24 yesterday.

Probably the Cajuns and Longhorns going 0-4 this week against meh teams.

It’s all just a mathematical formula and I want to say only about 25% is your actual win-loss record. The other 75% is your opponents and opponents opponents records. Hence the reason your RPI can get better even after losing a game

someone yesterday was saying how RPI really doesn't matter as much as people think in seeding.
OU has a RPI of 15 and is projected as a 5-7 national seed

It was from Walter Nolan, but immediately after the win. So Noon Wednesday.

D1baseball has our RPI at 23, warrennolan has our RPI at 24 this morning. MSU is 21 on Warren Nolan and 24 on D1 so someone isn’t updated through last night.
Either way with our rpi in the mid-20s with 2 games to go at most doesn’t look likely we’re going to get into a top 16 RPI unless our opponents are UT/UK instead of USC/Vandy.

And Texas has an RPI of 46 and is a projected 2 seed by almost everyone as safely in (20-10 conference record).
Oregon has an RPI of 50 and projected safely in, 19-11 conference record.
We had an RPI of 27 IIRC back in 2011 and was not selected for the tournament with a 13-17 conference record and 36-20 overall (missed SECT). At the time, I believe that was the highest RPI team to not be selected to the NCAAT ever.
RPI can be very misleading and it simply isnt the only thing the committee looks at by any means. It's 1 of the many factors. They have to weigh that vs. Q1 performance, RPI Top 50 performance, SOS, conference record, etc etc
It's all a delicate balancing act.

Yes your RPI is just one factor. For instance if LSU did wind up with a RPI #15 we would be a very solid 2-seed instead of a host due to going 13-17 in the regular season.

And Warren Nolan has us at 24 now. We were 23 when I went to bed last night. It moves in real-time with every game played in college baseball. It also shows how close everyone in this range.

They were #21 right after the Kentucky win, but other results that day pushed them back to #24. The same thing happened yesterday. They were #21 right after beating SC, then Vandy and DBU won to move back ahead of them. Xavier losing probably impacted their position vs Alabama.

RPI Question
I was hoping you would ask what it stood for so I could find out without looking like an idiot.

Well they have to find somebody to put in the top 8 that doesn't come from the SEC.
