Good rational post, which allows for some differences of opinion, and reasonable discussion; ie the opposite of what is currently going on at the Rant.

I think our Oline got dominated at the LOS, obviously, which blew up the game plan, which as you mentioned was to be more aggressive with MEtt.

Thought about this particularly after the Florida game. It seemed they were constantly running or faking end-arounds or reverses. There was usually a blur of players moving in different directions in the backfield. We on the other hand usually had our obvious right up the gut run for little or no gain.

This kind of stuff gives our defense fits: Florida, Bama, Auburn (2010), Arkansas, Mississippi and others have used this tactic against us with great success. Why don't we do it? Do we not (sarcasm alert) have the athletes?

The statistics clearly support that Clemson was the better team. Minus the 10 points on turnovers and we get beat handily. What is bothersome is that we also lost the statistical battle against Arky and Ole Miss. Sooner or later this catches up with you and it finally did on Monday! Surely Les sees that the offense has got to improve.

I agree with the OP, but my biggest only complaint is that when we had our last drive and on first down suprised Clemson by throwing for 8 yards, we had 2nd and 3rd down to pick up 2 yards. This would have either ran clock or made them use time outs.

I love the game plan which included throwing on 1st down and changing up how vanilla the offense usually is, but we outsmarted ourselves by throwing twice when we needed 2 yards in 2 plays. If we make that first down, we can almost run out the clock and win the game. IMO, that decision cost us the game.

Our offensive coaching staff is unable to make effective adjustments. Why no screen plays?

It is obvious they can't call plays to gain advantage in numbers or leverage. Just run our plays no matter where the defense lines up.

This offense has virtually no misdirection. Many high school offenses are more sophisticated than LSU's.

After winning the BCS C.G., Saban still wanted to improve his offense by hiring Boise St's OC, but his protege, Mustchamp, beat him to it.

In my opinion this is the single biggest problem with the LSU offense the past few years, and the biggest difference I've noticed in other top teams philosophies and how they run their offense.

I know it's not mentioned alot, given the sensitivity, but frankly I'm not that impressed by what Kragthorpe has brought to the table thus far. He doesn't call the plays but this man coached in the NFL - shouldn't he be able to draw up schemes to attack opposing defenses in ways that maximize the offensive talent? Or suggest certain formations and routes in key situations? And has Mettenberger gotten that much better during the year? I really don't see it. Some improvement but not what I would expect.

Just my opinion. Not letting the OC off the hook, but just wondering why there hasn't been more impact from Kragthorpe.

I agree. A complete Offensive staff overhaul is in order.

Maybe because days after his hire as OC, Krag was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, and eased down from OC to QB coach, and Stud sort of got the field promotion to OC, and it looks like there's some kind of input from Ensminger and of course Les Miles has a big hand in it all. So, to answer your question - this is why. It's a real cluster...

Good synopsis! This team, all year, just didn't have it all together. No playmaker. No killer instinct. No identity on Offense or Defense. Just didn't have it....for whatever the reason....all year.

Again, just like the Alabama Game, one or two plays go different and we win....in spite of how bad we looked on offense AND defense.

Same people who complain about conservatism on offense are now complaining about being too aggressive.....WTF?

What Coach in their right mind is going to run three straight pass plays to run clock when the clock is 1:47? If Clemson is forced to use their timeouts, they don't drive the field.

First pass play, ok. No running plays to get 2 yards and/or run clock is dumb, dumber, and dumbest.

Teach Les and Stud that when teams have an aggressive rush there are plays such as a DRAW or a screen play.

Misdirection is the perfect play for short yardage when facing a defense who is overreacting and selling out to stop the run. Their LB's were keying off Copeland and totally attacking the gap where Copelnad ws heading to. I simple misdirecton play like the one Miles used against Bama two years ago when Peterson picked up around 30 yds was what should have been called. Hell they could have faked a dive with Copeland and flicked it to any one of our backs except Ford (had ford been in they would been expecting something offtacle or wide) to go off tackle. This would have worked against Bama this year as well.

Good post. I agree that most people that are having ridiculous knee jerk reactions didn't watch the game that closely, or don't understand the game that well.

Unlike the Bama bcs championship game last year, we had an aggressive offensive gameplan. We ran more play action than I can remember (which the rant has been screaming for for a while now.) Unfortunately our pass protection was horrendous and the play action took way too long to develop.

I agree completely on the non pi calls. It seemed that their db's hit our receivers before the ball got there a bunch of times.

I wish we would have adjusted more in the second half to more runs since Hill had the hot hand. I didn't realize he only had 12 carries until last night.

I agree completely on the last offensive possession. First and second down calls were good calls, but the second down throw just wasn't executed. I would have liked to have seen a third down run, but if we get stuffed then everyone is screaming that we should have passed.

The annoying thing about rantards is that they don't realize that the right decision and the one that works aren't always the same. LSU fans have been calling to open up the playbook more, more play action, etc...all season...We do it and it doesn't work and now they hate that philosophy. Miles tried out 2 completely different strategies at the end of this game and the Bama game. Neither worked. Does that necessarily mean both were wrong? No.

That being said, I am disappointed in our offensive performance and inconsistency this season. Certain things definitely need to change. One thing not being discussed a ton is the difference in Mett's performance between the road and at home. Hopefully year 2 will bring a much more improved road performance for him.

Great Post.

Wasnt Mingo out for the entire second half?

Seemed when he was out of the game Clemson converted more

Sam + Mingo were punishing Boyd in the first half

And Simon keeps getting burned not sure how he thinks he can turn pro yet

LSU needs to hire Chad Morris and get a little more creative next year on offense

Great post and analysis.

I don't agree with the play calling on the final drive. The pass to get us 8 yards was fine, but 2nd and 2 and 3rd and 2, and us not running the ball is ridiculous.

Jeremy Hill had zero carries in the 4th quarter. Zero carries....

Lucky arse heave by Boyd and yet another amazing catch by Hopkins gets them the first. Again, Reid doesn't get his head around when he definitely could have knocked that ball down.

I still don't know how that kid made that catch. I haven't rewatched it but plan on it. Nice post

Miles, on the other hand, stands put with the offense that couldn't cross Bama's 50 yard line--totally different mindset.

Yet we have crossed the 50 every time weve played bama.

How many screen passes did we throw to slow down the rush? Only 1 I could think of is the middle screen we ran in the 3rd quarter.

1) screens work against blitzes. They were often pressuring us with their front four or maybe one more.

2) we threw at least two screens (I didn't watch every play because I was dropping beads off a bourbon street balcony into pedestrians' drinks)

Agree on both counts. In the replay from the quarterback's POV it looks like the ball is gonna hit Reid in the back until the very end. So frickin' frustrating.
