Yep i.e. the honey badger vs Oregon 2011

The kicking team has a significant advantage to recover the ball in the case of a muffed kick. Allowing returns there would magnify the advantage so they prevent returning muffed kicks. This is the correct answer & the rule makes sense. How many times does the return team have any players *behind* the returner? Close to 0% If you allow the coverage team to return a muffed punt, the punt returner is usually the only guy who could possibly make a tackle.
This makes even less sense to me than using the rule under the guise of “safety”
Your return man can’t field a punt? Not my problem. Fix it in practice. Don’t nullify a game changing play because one guy can’t catch

Surprisingly, I had to explain this to the group I was with at Drift that it wasn’t a touchdown. I think the bar even played the fight song like it counted. Lots of people don’t know you can’t advanced a muffed punt apparently

kick (in this case only the kicking team is not allowed to return a recovered onside kick, but the receiving team can)
I dont believe that is true. I have seen onside kicks returned for TD.
The muff rule Has been that way since I played (Elvis was still a hot thing then!). I always assumed it was that way becsuse the returner is back there by himself and if the kick is muffed and returnable than the receiving teams would quit attempting a return.
The lesser known rule on punts here is that if the kicking team touches ball but doesnt secure or down it the receiving team can attempt to pick it up and run with it without fear of losing possesion if the attempt is unsuccessful. Once possessed however the fumble rule applies.

A muffed punt is not technically a fumble because the receiving team never has possession.
I can't imagine the melt if the muff had gone in the end zone and then LSU fell on it. A muff into the end zone is a touchback. Dead ball the minute it crosses the plane of the goal line.
