Can’t advance a muffed punt. It’s a dead ball as soon as a recovery is made.

If the runner gathers it and fumbles it during the return you can though.

It wasn’t changed. It has been that way forever.

Bc it’s football and there are rules that make no sense in at all.

Por ejemplo, you can’t return a muffed punt or an onside kick (in this case only the kicking team is not allowed to return a recovered onside kick, but the receiving team can)

Safety of the punt returner or muffer. He is completely exposed and if he drops the punt he has to look down and is completely helpless as a bunch of 22 mile per hour missles are about to cut him in half.

Thanks. I've been watching football for a long time and never noticed this rule.

Same thing happened in the 2018 Fiesta Bowl when Justin Jefferson muffed a punt. The “TD” return was called back…..UCF ball at the spot of the muff.

I think the rule has been around much longer than that.

Explain like I’m 5 how exactly it improves safety? This rule has never made sense me

If he drops it he’s looking down to recover it either way and is still exposed just the same. How does not allowing it to be advanced improve safety?

If the return man muffs the punt but picks it up can he still return it? If so, the punting team should be able to advance it as well

Rule was never changed. You’ve never been able advance a muffed kick on any type. The kicking team has a significant advantage to recover the ball in the case of a muffed kick. Allowing returns there would magnify the advantage so they prevent returning muffed kicks.

Just to add a little more clarity or confusion without explaining the difference…

In a muffed punt, there was never possession by the receiving team and the recovery by the kicking team cannot be advanced. Had the ball been caught and possessed by the receiving team and advanced, then a subsequent fumble could be picked up and returned.

This is the correct answer & the rule makes sense. How many times does the return team have any players *behind* the returner? Close to 0%
If you allow the coverage team to return a muffed punt, the punt returner is usually the only guy who could possibly make a tackle.

This makes sense to me and wasn’t something I’d thought of. Thanks for the clarification
