But goodness, wouldn't that have been funny if "I'm gonna fricking lay this guy out" was the thought going through his head on that play? XD

Terrific play call by the DCs on the play after, even though it was neutralized by Garcia's mobility. Hope to see it against Stafford next week.

I dont know what the ref was thinking.

He could have easily stepped away and avoided contact but he actually initiated contact with Garcia.

He was a pretty big guy so I assume he used to play and it was probably just instinctual.

One of the craziest things I have ever seen a ref do.

The other refs should have flagged us for having 12 men on the field for that play.

Anyone else think the ref got tired of USC using him as a pick, and decided to lay the wood to Garcia?
Yes....Twice before the ref hit, USC and Garcia called for routes as close as they could to this referee in which both cases the referee unintentially picked our defender....Garcia then was going to use this same official as a pick on his run and the ref fired back. What other explanation explains the referee's action. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, don't fool me again fool or I'll hit you fool.

not only that, their slot guy blocked the ref from getting out of the way both times...it looked like a total rigged play to me

Yep he was the pick for USC's crossing pattern. Can you blame him!

The only thing the Ref didn't do was lock his arms and drive through the tackle.

"USC scored on that drive anyways. So it really didn't matter in the end.

Does anyone know what the ruling would be if Garcia had fumbled when the ref hit him? I guess it would be ruled a fumble, but that ref would be under serious investigation."

Seriou Invetigation if the ref recovered the fumble

As a high school official, umpire actually, I can tell you that he was trying to keep from getting knocked down. You either turn to the side to make yourself smaller or use your body and hands to keep the players off of you. You realy don't have time to think about it. That's why they like to have larger guys in the middle like that.

I hope Peveto shows that to the linebackers in their meeting. Maybe they will learn to slide down the line, breakdown and explode thru the man!

Agreed...he was expecting to get hit so in order to hopefully keep his balance, he leaned into the guy. It is alway better to be the hitter rather than the hitee.

A fumble on that play though would have been a disaster.
