Rabalais noted that he thought Howard would stick it out being his dad was an LSU quarterback. He noted “Makes you wonder where Howard saw his competition with Daniels and Garrett going forward.”

Most of us here didn’t see Howard being ready to compete for 2023, he still needed more work. So, was he that concerned about being able to beat Nuss in 2024?

There’s no way he was beating out Nuss, and big time QBs sitting for 3 years is long gone with portal now being a free for all.

It’s just the way it is now and him leaving means nothing. LSU will land one in the transfer portal in a couple years to fill his void if we don’t already have someone ready to go.

Lots of guys think they want to compete until they get to campus and see how tough the competition really is.

As I said in a post last night there is only one reason for this. BK said he talked to all three QBs and evidently one of those talks did not go as expected by the player.

I knew someone was going to leave but I wasn’t expecting Howard to. I thought it was going to be Nuss.

Now we know Nuss isn’t ever transferring, he’s got the 2024 job as starter locked up!

The entirety of what Rabalais wrote about Walker

quote:

… Not much in the sports world surprises me at this advanced stage of my career, but I was stunned to see news Wednesday afternoon that LSU quarterback Walker Howard is entering the transfer portal. Quarterback is the position at which players transfer the most. But I figured Howard, who followed in his father Jamie’s footsteps to LSU, would stick it out and try to become the starter in 2024 after Jayden Daniels. This makes you wonder where Howard saw his competition with Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier going forward. LSU coach Brian Kelly was emphatic after the Citrus Bowl that he believed Daniels, Nussmeier and Howard would be back in the spring. Maybe he was just as surprised as I was.

Uhh, doesn't make me wonder. Seems rather clear he thought he wasn't beating out Nussmeir for the backup.

With a true college football coach leading the program, I am far less concerned about a QB like Howard transferring. Unlike the days of Les Miles and Ogeron, a solid football program doesn't have to pin it's hopes of success on one player at any position. Kelly builds teams. There is a difference between an average coach who tries to build for one championship or hopes to catch lightning in a bottle and a coach who truly understands how to build durable winning programs. No single player, no matter their talent should make or break a true team. The LSU QB room is still strong, still talented and has some quality players in the pipeline. I'm disappointed by the news but not at all worried about the future.

Uh, it makes me think that he wasn't going to get an opportunity to beat out Nuss/JD, just like he wasn't this past year. I think it is perfectly understandable that a QB with skills only wants an opportunity to play and learn. Howard was not given that opportunity this past year and I believe he sees the same for next year with JD returning. That is just a bit much to ask. I think he was hoping to be in the same position that Nuss was this past year. Running the scout squad and not gettin game opportunities another year was too much. I wish him much luck, unless he plays in the SEC....then he is just TigerBait.

this was me I was a pretty good hs athlete and had the opportunity to walk on at LSU, I was just sure they had overlooked what a stud I was, when I got out there I realized I was in over my head and I was likely to get killed if I over stayed my welcome

recruiting rankings shape everyone's expectations BEFORE they perform with the big boys. Sometimes you just can't make the jump. Walker knows where he stacks up and so does BK.

So fans freaking out is just damn laughable. Let it be. Let it go.

This is the new normal. You keep three top tier QBs at any given time, not two.

College football parity is going to ramp up.
