Question for experts regarding 3rd down conversions - conference play only.

Just looking for educated opinions. What is a reasonable goal for LSU in 3rd down conversion vs SEC opponents? 100% goal is obvious but what is reasonable. LSU was 7 for 14 in TDC against NT and I'm guessing CLM wants to improve on that aspect of the game. TIA.

You obviously want to convert as many 3 down conversions as you can.
That is a little biased statistic from the NT game. LSU made 1st downs several times on 1st or 2nd. To be put in a 3rd down situation sucks more than anything. I would say to truly be competitive in the SEC we need to convert 60% of our 3rd downs. This is based on the fact that we have an electric special teams, a solid defense, and a punter/kicker that can do work. If we drop below 50% we will probably drop some games.

OK thanks for the info. Was reading an interesting article on third down conversions for SEC teams. Strong correlation between higher TDC percentages and championship teams.
SEC TDC percentages over 5 years.
SEC TDC percentages over 5 years.

Obviously you want to convert as many as you can, but if you go 50% your doing very well. Realisticly, anything above 35% is solid. You have to factor in that on some drives the offense won't even see a 3rd down, so it's kind of a rare down with less chances.
