Question for defensive gurus

Is Baker an elite DC? It seems most think so. Lane surely wanted to keep him.
I don’t see sound schemes in several situational scenarios. Been consistently inconsistent to me. Maybe I just don’t see it.

well, we sucked arse on defense without him and have gotten better and better the last two years. I think he got a good bit out of some guys that didnt appear to be very good players before he arrived

Yes. There's a reason he'll be a P5 HC in a couple years.
it's incredibly hard to coach a defense around a group of guys for 12 games, then not have half of them, especially your top 3 LB, in the 13th game.
What makes it even harder is you don't have a good offense to go up against in practice to see what needs to be improved. You often hear coaches say they want to "simplify" or "open up" their schemes, and without a solid team to practice against, it's very difficult to be able to determine what you need to do for those specific players.
He probably also wasn't counting on Cooley taking the worst angle he's taken all season on that Houston carry on one of their earlier possessions.
Baker is an aggressive DC. Mistakes get amplified when you call defense the way he does. When you're playing with a young and inexperienced group of guys (Especially at the LB position) you're going to see more mistakes. It was good for those guys to get that experience, but what happened tonight is what happens when guys blow their assignments. Not much a coach can do if the players don't execute.

All of his best players opted out.

X's and O's are not his strength. Usually it's player engagement and the guys playing hard. When he doesn't get that, you get shite efforts like tonight.

The defense looked great compared to what it was before he got here. He did pretty good considering he was playing the 2nd and 3rd string all game against the #21 ranked team . We had a great chance to win the game with the on side kick but shite happens. We will be extremely better on both sides of the ball next year. Lane gives a shite about his team and winning.

It’s like you don’t even know that LSU players opted out.

mhm mhm…and what makes you say this exactly?

LSU fielded a top 15 defense this year. All his stars sat on defense tonight including a gutted LB core that's a big reason we lost this game. The games where Baker got badly out schemed this year with the exception of Ole Miss, he was missing a key cog in the middle and this is where teams killed us. Vandy for example, ate us up because Whit/DL was hurt and went straight at Perkins who you just can't disguise being undersized.
Show me a great DC who consistently every week puts out amazing defenses and doesn't have an effort like you see tonight every now and then. Especially one with all your stars eating popcorn on the sidelines or at home.

Dude… We could not stop them tonight. We were getting Man handled upfront. We couldn’t stop ole Miss, we couldn’t stop Vanderbilt, we couldn’t stop Texas A&M, we couldn’t cover the tight end over the middle on a drag route, we had trouble with mis direction, we had trouble setting the edge, we had trouble keeping a running quarterback inside the pocket, how much more do you want to know about how bad our defense was this year?…Was it better than before thua year? Hell yeah. Was it good at times, hell yeah. Was it elite or game changing, hell no!
