10-2 in the SEC West is a hell of a season.

So a team that returns almost all of its starters plus the best QB we've had since 2007 that went 13-0 playing the toughest schedule in the country last year is going to take a step back? The defense will be as strong if not stronger then last year. We replace Oregon and West Virginia with Washington and Idaho, we get bama at home at night, and our toughest road game is arguably at Arkansas. The rest of the west outside of bama and Arkansas is not that impressive, it's top heavy just like last year and the east is still a joke outside UGA. If mettenburger doesn't implode and we play how we're capable, anything less then Miami would be a disappointment.

2 immediate thoughts

1. I think LSU overachieved last season.
2. How do you know you have the best qb you've had since 2007?

Hoping to go undefeated. Happy with 1 regular season loss. 2 regular season losses will have me consoling my self that that record is nothing to be ashamed of.

People tend to overlook the dominant play of our defense and special teams so many times. They are the reason why we were able to have so many short fields to work with on offense. For an offense that wasn't overwhelmingly dominant, but efficient, that is all you can ask for..hence 13 wins.

ETA: There was one team in the country better than us last year - Alabama. The reason we beat them on 11/5 was because of 1. Brad Wing and Drew Alleman and 2. Timely plays on defense.

I'll say this: before last year started, and we started dominating our opponents, everyone was looking forward to this year.

People on the SECr will say that's bullshite but many people wrote off last year as a 10-11 win season and was saying this is our year. Lots of young talent last year that surprised a ton of ppl. This year will be even better.

I would disagree. And I would add that, if true, this is sad.

We handily beat multiple conference champions, beat Bama at their house, won the West, won the SEC, and finished 13-0 in what many described as one of the toughest schedules ever. That's a hell of a lot of "overachieving."

Yes I would agree that having the greatest regular season in college football history with Jordan Jefferson and Jarret Lee at QB is over achieving. Looking at every undefeated team since 1976—as far back as rankings were kept from week to week— there are only five teams who beat at least six ranked teams: 2000 Oklahoma, 1998 Tennessee,1997 Michigan, and the 1987 Miami Hurricanes. The Sooners and Hurricanes had five, the Volunteers had four, and the Wolverines had two. We beat eight ranked teams(4 on the road counting UGA) by an average of 3.5 points per game more then any of the others listed. We had the highest-scoring team of any of others listed and won by an average of 25 points a game. Nine games by at least four touchdowns. Now that's what I call over achieving.

If you've followed the LSU QB position the last 4 years, it's a safe bet to place your life savings on that assumption. With our running backs, ZM simply has to play average for us to be a MUCH better offense.

No they weren't! If that were true and you had started with $150 the first week and let it ride for the entire season you would have ended up with over a million bucks!!!!

Anything less than 14-0 is going to be a big disappointment for several reasons:

1. "Next year is our year" was the salve for 1/9.

2. You were expecting last year for LSU to lay an egg offensively because of our QB play. That is not the expected case this year. Mett is believed to be the Mettsiah by most of the knowlegable fan base.

3. LSU's schedule is great this year. Eight home games and Bama at home. There will be a few tough road games though (FLA, Aub, Ark, and I think USCe. LSU will rely heavily on the conference schedule to pick up its schedule strength.

4. Finally, because that is what LSU fans expect every year... Where else could a coach win a NC and average 11 wins a season and be a miserable failure.

8 home games.

Several of which are against nobody teams. I mean I know Washington and north Texas are real ground pounders but I think we can overcome.

I'm honestly not worried about the away games either simply because LSU doesn't play away games.

You seem to be placing a lot of your skepticism about LSU's season in how Mett performs. That's fine. But you should remember that we don't need him to be the best qb to ever come through LSU. We just need him to be as good as Lee or Jefferson was.

This is either wishful hoping, especially losing to USC, UF, A&M or you should learn to say no to the crack sellers in Gainesville. The biggest games pre BCSCG for us will be Bamer and SECCG. We have high motivation to whop some elephant arse on 11/3 (bad enough that ESPN can't push for another Bama muligan), then beat the best of the east because that will be the only game keeping us for playing for the BCS trophy.

No need to be concerned about our QB. He's been in the program one and half years and has experienced championship competition at the lower level of college football. He will do fine.

I agree.

There are very few spots on the team where we are weaker

Agreed, but DT is one of them and that's a pretty big spot. We have question marks there and at WR (and let's face it, QB until we actually see it). Also, as crazy as this would have sounded a few months ago, DB depth. Still, we have very few weak spots compared to most years and most other teams.

quote:

and most we are arguably stronger.

Even though we return basically the same guys, I think the extra year of development is going to make our OL and RBs pretty fricking awesome. Add to that Mett's ability to make--not the deep throws (we actually did that well last year)--but the 15-25 intermediate throws, and I think our offense is going to be extremely dangerous. We just need 1) Mett to stay healthy, and 2) a couple of WRs/TEs to step up.

quote:

10-2 would be under performing for this team.

Hard to say that without knowing how good everybody else is. You can't just say, we are better than last year, last year we went 13-1, so this year, we should also go 13-1 or better. We don't play last year's teams. I know on paper it appears easier, I can't imagine both Auburn and Florida won't be much improved. And we go to the Jordan-Hare and the Swamp. And we swap Kentucky and Tennessee for A&M and South Carolina. Not to mention going to Arkansas. Our schedule may be easier than last year, but it ain't easy.

That said, I think we go 14-0 and frick 'erbody up along the way.
