Running a Tennessee end zone defense? I like it!
Seriously, I can't believe that Mingo and Matthieu don't make some of your defenses.
Also, I love Chad Jones, but over Reid?
Anyway, I'm still drinking. Carry on...

because we've had a lot of good players at their positions. you must be young. the oldest player on your team played in 2006, the majority in the last 2 years

Man this is a young group! Michael Brooks and Eric Hill are two of the best LBs LSU ever had. I think those two plus Bradie James would be my LBs. You may want to consider Tommy Casanova somewhere in the secondary as well. Peterson, Claiborne, and Webster would be a very good CB group.

Well, I would consider myself young but most here would call me gramps
I've got a short term memory (probably from drinking) too... But! Looking at spears and mingo's stats and from my confidence that Mingo is going to have a stellar year, I pick him for my defense every time. Considering that, I think I'd like to see this post revisited after this season.
Like I said, it's just conversation since nothing else is going on right now...

Base 4-3:
DL: Montgomery, Dorsey, Lavalais, Hill
LB: Highsmith, James, Sheppard
CB: Claiborne, Peterson
S: Landry, Reid
Nickel (obvious passing downs):
DL: Montgomery, Dorsey, Williams, Mingo
LB: Highsmith, Sheppard
CB: Claiborne, Peterson, Mathieu
S: C. Jones, Reid
I substituted Williams and Mingo on the DL for extra pass rush, Mathieu at CB for obvious reasons, and C. Jones at S for better coverage skills.
Some guys close to making this post-2000 list:
DL: Wroten, Nevis, Spears
LB: Cam Vaughn, Jeremy Lawrence, Trev Faulk
CB: Webster, T. Daniels
S: B. Taylor, J. Hunt, Steltz
DL: Montgomery, Dorsey, Lavalais, Hill
LB: Highsmith, James, Sheppard
CB: Claiborne, Peterson
S: Landry, Reid

If he had not been injured, he could have been LSU's greatest LB ever.

OK, I stand corrected.
I would also add Darry Beckwith, pre-injury. In his sophomore season he appeared to be on his way to being one of the best LB's ever, very strong, and very fast, but he never was the same after those nagging knee injuries.

Definitely not an edit.
Edit was to spell Reid's name correctly

Ali Highsmith shouldn't be sniffing anyone's team. And Mingo just ain't in over Marcus Spears yet. I'm not sure he's in over Marquise Hill... and Nevis over Lavalais and Kyle Williams has me

Mo was the first corner taken and a top ten pick. How would he not make it?

Craig Steltz sure isn't getting enough love on this board. First team all-sec, Thorpe award finalist, consensus all-american, 11 interceptions in just 20 starts,

Forgot about him. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

Because we've been just that good at DB since 2000. I couldn't justify putting him over Peterson or Webster.

Jarvis Green > Montgomery

To me, Claiborne/Webster would be 2a/2b and I might even have Claiborne as 2a. Both are similar as far as they have great hands and play the ball in the air really well. Not sure who the better tackler would be but I guess that would probably make the difference.
