It is spelled Alex but pronounced Alec according to the family.

Herbert is pronounced A-bear in Louisiana not Her-Bert, so it is Alec not Alex.

They should have made his middle name Alec if they wanted to call him Alec. His name wasn't even Alexander.

My God at least look it up man...

Simeon Alexander Box is the namesake.

I am sure Hawthorne axed his family how to pronounce it...

I remember West Virginia had a basketball player from Germany about 10 years ago named Herbert; they called him "Air-bear."

Reminds me of that old CB radio novelty song called "Convoy":

"They've even got a bear in the air."

So nobody with firsthand knowledge of how it was pronounced ever told anyone anything?

Hawthorne pronounced Rogie Magee as RO-GEE. Rogie was from my hometown of Bogalusa and he always pronounced his name Rah-jee yet Hawthorne was corrected on live Radio during a game and said that he pronounced it that way because he was told that’s how Magee pronounced it. Uh, no he did not.

So Hawthorne’s story of the Family of Alex Box pronouncing it as “Eleck” (his pronunciation) is questionable at best.
