If Brennan is the starter and DOESN'T have a good year, then his targets (Chase and Marshall) will also have down years.

Brennan not having a great year does not make Ja'Marr Chase any less talented. It just means that Brennan isn't good.

This is a thread about the best players. Independent of everything else, Chase & Marshall are two of the 5-6 best players on the team.

Yes, I know it's not college, but it IS "doing something".

All these kids were great in high school.

Im not disrespecting Brennan by saying he hasn't done anything, or that he has lost QB battles leading up to this point. Those are just reasons why you can't put him as the 4th best player on a team full of studs.

Are we going "best" or "top" players? OP says top.

I'm making a subtle distinction, in that a TOP player is one who contributes the most.
In theory, your BEST players could be guys at the same position. You could have a wealth of players at Linebacker, but only those actually seeing the field would qualify as TOP players.

Your starting QB on an explosive offense will be one of your TOP players, regardless of whether he's in the top 10 in terms of talent. He will be more vital to the team's success than any number of players at different positions, no matter how good they are.

I don’t think there is a difference

Chase & Marshall both broke the old TD record. You know what they can do. If the Qb play is bad & their numbers aren’t there, I don’t think it changes the fact they are still two of the top 5 players on the team.

That’s the flaw in having Brennan high. He hasn’t proved any thing. So imagine he doesn’t play well, and at the beginning of the year you thought he was the 4th best player on the team. Lol. Maybe at that point you’d realize there was absolutely no justification for that ranking to begin with.

And yet, in your list, you put Stevens in there.

Do you really think Stevens is the 5th most TALENTED guy we have, or is in a vital position and good enough overall?

I think there's definitely a distinction between most talented, and top performer. Emery is probably one of the most talented RBs we have, he's still not guaranteed to even start as of yet.

I had Stevens 3rd.

Here's why

quote:

JaCoby Stevens SEC rankings among safeties, 2019

Pressures: 1st (13)
Sacks: 1st (5)
Hurries: 1st (7)
TFLs: 1st (9.0)
Stops: 1st (33)
Run stop %: 1st (5.6)
Tackles: 2nd (92)
INTs: 5th (3)

1 of 2 players nationally with 5 sacks, 5 passes defended, and 3 INT (also: Isaiah Simmons)

Im not ranking most talented. Im ranking best player. I want to see production. Will definitely factor in upside as well. But more of the former.

Emery would be in my top 12 or so on this same list. Once you get past the returning tried and true players.

Flott, Damone Clark, Ty Davis-Price. Guys that have flashed early in their career and will be forced into large roles for the 2020 Tigers.

Putting Brennan 4th is like putting Todd Harris 4th, and i guarantee most people would have beef with that.

You can't have Chase without Brennan or vise versa. So they would would 1 and 2 for me.

3 Stingley
4 Shelvin
5 Clark

If Brennan has a BAD year (and the backups do too), then Chase and Marshall become very talented bystanders. Nobody would dispute their upcoming high draft status, but they also wouldn't automatically be the most vital/top players in that scenario.

If you can't get the ball to your WRs, then they aren't effective.

Neither did Joe Burrow before last year.
how did that work out?

And who do you think is throwing the ball to all these other guys that are a shoe in to be LSU’s top players and potentially win the heisman?
Brennan better be in the top 5 or no one else will be.

You guys cant critically think for shite.

JaMarr Chase arguably just had the best single season in CFB history. Brennan being a bad QB will never change that he is the best player on the team.

DJ Chark was the 2nd best player on the 2017 offense.

Danny Etling was not a top 5 player. shite he wasn't even a top 10 player.

Lester....... why are people so sold on a guy who has NEVER started a game OR even Played a whole game as they are with Myles..... he has NOT taken a snap in crunch time when LSU needed a score..... I’m not saying that he can’t be good but man I feel for this kid if he doesn’t throw for 3-4 tds a game. He will get crucified on here.

Projecting LSU’s top 5 players in 2020

If you deal with known players only, then the appropriate title is "who are the top returning players this year?"

If you are PROJECTING the top 5 players, it can be something different.

Why are people projecting Brennan to have a good/great season?
Because he has a strong arm, he's been in the system, the system is wide-open pass-first, and he has 2 excellent WRs coming back, as well as whoever else steps up. If he has the season we hope he is capable of, then he will be one of, if not THE top QB in the SEC. If he's that, he's going to be one of the top 5 players on the team.

It's really pretty simple. And y'know, there are no wrong answers here, even if you disagree.
