BOOT UP, BAWS!!! It's been a long time since we lost to Michigan (I still think we were the better team), and I've been counting down the days.

Honestly, I have nothing to say about ULM and we really have no idea the rotation The General is going to have. This thread is mostly to get all basketball thoughts into a thread and give opinions on what we might see.

This team is going to look VERY different than last season. We already lost Adam Miller who, in my mind, was by far the best player on this team. Guy was a stud...hopefully he can get healthy and come back with a fire next year.

New Players Expected To See Significant Minutes:

SG Brandon Murray 6'5 214 - Highly recruited player that Wade got on early. He wasn't very highly ranked but just continued to shoot up the rankings. Finished as a top 100 player. Very athletic, physically mature for a Freshman. Shooting stroke will come and go, but great athlete and has been mentioned as a bulldog on the defensive end.

C Efton Reid 6'11 238 - The crown jewel of the LSU recruiting class. a 5-star center that is physically mature and very skilled. Lacks elite athleticism but has terrific athleticism and can shoot the ball. Centers usually take a little more time to develop so we will have to watch how he progresses.

F Alex Fudge 6'8 185 - Early enrollee last season that got to practice with the team all Spring. Top 60 player coming out of HS. Absolute freak of an athlete. Still needs to add weight and gain experience but will get better and better as the season goes on.

F Tari Eason 6'8 216 - Transfer from Cincinnati. Started 8 games averaging 8ppg, 6rpg, 1.3bpg, 1.2spg. He was one of the best offensive rebounders in the AAC, and Wade said during the offseason that when you take his numbers and put them on an average of 40mpg he was the best offensive rebounders in the nation and one of the best rebounders, too. Expect big things from this guy.

G Xavier Pinson 6'2 154 - Played LOTS of basketball for Mizzou over 3 years. Was somewhat a Cam Thomas type for them. Was asked to score and shoot and create offense. Averaged 13.6ppg for Mizzou last season. For LSU, Wade has mentioned multiple times that Pinson is a calming influence on the team and he is going to be asked to have a different and role here. Hearing him speak, he seems to have bought in to that idea. He has referred to Wade as a "basketball genius" and has mentioned how much he respects him. I think Pinson is an excellent edition and is the calming influence Wade says.

Potential Lineup:

Wade said he is comfortable with an 8 man rotation, I think that rotation can be 9 depending on what happens with O'Neal.

From the Nicholls game, Mwani, Gaines, Murray, Tari played nearly the entire game. Fudge played a lot. Add in Days, Pinson, Reid...that's your 8.

In my opinion, I think this is the lineup that Wade puts on the floor:

F Eason
F Days
F Mwani
G Gaines
G Pinson

I'm very curious to see the rotation he has from there. Is there a possibility we ever see Reid/Days/Eason together? What about Mwani at the 2? We've heard some of these guys (Gaines and Mwani) have worked very hard on their shot and they are weapons now. Only time will tell.

Prediction

I don't know anything about ULM. I know Wade has preached time and time again about defense. I think without defense and tenacity we can't achieve much this season. I actually finally think this team will be tough on D and we will look much different than times past.

LSU 81
ULM 64

Individually, I think Tari Eason will be 1st team ALL-SEC and Newcomer of the Year. Mwani said he wants to win DPOY but I'm not sure that's possible.

Tari Eason will turn heads - I'm excited to have a big time "Energy" player like Mwani coming off the bench.

This will be a fun season- Ready to be in the PMAC tonight!

Barring injury, I think Reid is in the starting line up. When Wade has gotten 5 star guys who MAY only be at LSU one season (Naz, Watford, Thomas) he doesn't waste that, potential, lone season with them on the bench.

IMO, the one question mark is who is at the 3? Eason looks to be a guy who can be very efficient (maybe like an E. Williams type player). But are he and Days on the court together a bit redundant? Meaning, can either step out and guard a true wing or space the floor from that spot? Wilkinson is athletic enough to guard the wing. Wade just wants him to play the Marlon Taylor role. Defend and hit a few corner 3's (along with a baseline alley-oop or two). Wilkinson is probably better for spacing (which is what Wade's offense is predicated on). But can you pass up the efficiency and numbers (particularly on the glass) that Eason looks like he can give you? LSU's defense has been terrible under Wade. He's tried to pass it off that their "first shot defense" is good, but they have been awful at grabbing defensive rebounds (probably some truth there). Well, Eason should be a big help in the rebounding dept.

I doubt LSU suddenly gets significantly better on defense. So the play may be to get significantly better on the defensive glass by playing Eason with Days. That may clog of the lane a bit more than Wade wants and make LSU less efficient on offense, but this team has a hard cap if they can't get better on defense and defensive rebounding.

I'll gladly take a little be less scoring/offensive efficiency if the tradeoff is much better defense/defensive rebounding.

Did I completely miss what happened to Jarrel Colbert? No one seems to be talking about him.

Gonna be the 10th man or so. Only will play in blowouts or significant foul trouble. He played against Nicholls and most said he did not look ready vs them.

I think he is going to be a player but needs a little time

Well that's where I'm most curious on what he does. I think Eason is perhaps your best player from what some people have been saying. Days didn't come back to only play 20 minutes. Reid is obviously an excellent player. I honestly have no idea what's going to happen and that's what makes it even more exciting.

I’m still super bummed about this. Wade has done a nice job of adding size to the roster almost overnight, but CBB is still about guard play in the tourney, and Miller is a guy that could have gotten hot and taken us on a Final Four run. Oh well. I know everybody thought he’d up being not only the leading scorer, but likely the go-to guy at the end of games. The latter is what hurts the most. So, a couple of questions from those who know much more about this team than I do:

1) About how many ppg were we counting on from Miller?

2) Is most of that missing production supposed to come from another guard or 2 who’s gonna wind up getting those minutes or just more evenly spread out

3) Who’s taking the last shot at the end of the game down by 2 or 3?

I guess those questions are as rhetorical as anything—we’ll just have to see how it plays out and who emerges. Glass-half-full way to look at it is it’s gonna give some different guys opportunities to step up and show that they’re dudes. Maybe there’s a gamer with big nuts ready take on a much bigger role than expected.

With the way the NBA draft is now, isn’t there just as of a chance that he declares than comes back for a 3rd year? He’s got enough tape that if he goes to pre-draft workouts and shows he’s healthy, isn’t he still a 1st rounder? Wasn’t that one of the biggest bummers about his injury that it may mean we never see him suit up in an LSU uniform at all?

Sorry, frick all the negativity. Excited and ready to ride with tPear and this new squad. Boot up!

I don’t think Miller has the tape to go pro off an ACL. He’ll be back.

And yes his injury creates a huge void at guard. Now lack players that can shoot, create own shot, and create shots for others

Guy was a starter on a loaded Team USA U19 team all summer. I think he was going to play 30+ minutes.

I don't think one guy replaces him, but it certainly means Murray will play more. With that there will be more and up down play but could pay off big time for next season.

Great question. I think Guys like Gaines or Pinson will have the ball to create and kick. Not going to have Javonte or Cam take an iso to score.

He took a backseat to two studs at Illinois and was really their 5th option. Part of the reason coming to LSU was to showcase he was more than just a spot up shooter. He's mentioned multiple times about coming back. Add in the fact that the combine will be at the end of his timetable recovery process, I don't see how there is any chance he leaves

Losing miller is a big time bummer, a backcourt with him and pinson would have been pretty good.

I get a little nervous thinking about Gaines n Pinson as our 1/2, Miller would keep most of the focus away from Pinson to allow him to create as a secondary player.. Gaines isn't really a threat (as of writing this) so just putting more pressure on Pinson to create offense. Hopefully Murray is ready to get in a be a threat on offense.

with that said frick it and throw it down to the bigs and play some defense.

Not sure about a huge void, but the depth wont be there and basically puts Gaines in the spotlight. Gaines went from bench to starting. If he shines, LSU could make a run.
