If he leaves as a junior, with these two awards in hand, will this be enough to get his number retired some day.
(I know they actually don't retire the number at LSU)

I have a feeling he is coming back. So he may win another Thorpe Award. I think the NFL is locking out so he'll come back and be even better next year.
Plus LSU will have a QB...so I see a 14-0 season.

Nah. Only two LSU football jerseys have ever been retired. Billy Cannon's and Tommy Cassanova's.
According to the LSU AD office press release:
"To have a jersey retired at LSU, an athlete must have completed intercollegiate competition for LSU a minimum of five years prior to nomination. Athletes must have demonstrated truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments, exceeding and in addition to all criteria used for Hall of Fame selection. The athletic performance must be considered unique, such as winning of a Heisman Trophy or National Player of the Year award, and should be based on the total LSU career. Athletes may also be considered for making dramatic impact on the popularity of his or her sport or for significant participation in positive change in LSU Athletics. Nominees must have a unanimous vote of support from the Hall of Fame committee."
I'm guessing that means PP7 would also have to graduate. If he takes off early for the NFL, that won't happen unless he comes back to finish his degree someday.

Guys come back in the offseason and finish their degrees and work out.
I'm sure he would be smart enough to come back and get this done.

Yea, he'd have to come back and get his degree, which is easily doable
If he does that, why not have his number retired? He's been the best player at his position for 2 years now, and maybe the best at another position(return man). And there's no doubt he's at least in the discussion for best ever at LSU, he is the best, IMO.
People are usually quick to say no in this discussion and rarely acknowledge a current player as the best ever, but there aren't very many better than Peterson, that's a fact.

Dorsey has three awards, btw. Do you think he'll have his # retired??

True. Shaq came back to get his degree, and was bestowed that honor.

Tommy Cassanova's.
Wasn't he #37? And isn't Hatcher #37?

Peterson may be even better.

there is no 20, an i think they said something along the lines that Hatcher will be able to wear 37 till he graduates since he i still since they don't want to take away his number

the guy on the NOLA news station keeps saying cornerback Patrick Peterson, but everytime he says it, it sounds like quarterback. its messing with my head.
and then i start thinking, i wish he was saying QB. high hopes for the next few years.

I love what you're trying to do man, but think before you post. They only retire (which is an inaccurate use of the word - should change it to "honor") Jersey's now, not numbers. #20 will be the only retired number. Hopefully, the modern realities will set in and they will unretire #20 as well, leaving the jersey itself retired (or "honored" to use my term).
With the new criteria, I think a handful of football players merit consideration based on their playing careers(I don't know the degree status of all of them): Jerry Stovall (one of the closest seconds in Heisman history), Kevin Faulk (3x All SEC - if there was a Heisman for AP yardage, he might have won it twice), Glenn Dorsey(2X All American, and did he not win an annual award for which he was eligible, save the Heisman and Bednarik?) and Patrick Peterson (First LSU Bednarik and Thorpe winner, 2x All American).
Others based solely on their LSU career? Gaynell Tinsley, Mike Anderson, Charles Alexander, Josh Reed and Ben Wilkerson (almost based solely on the Rimington, and that was a co-win - could be out of place here, but I love the guy) maybe make up the next tier (Faneca might have gotten some talk in this area had he stayed for his senior year and picked up a second All American - Reed is likewise hurt by a position switch and coming out early).

On a side note, I had an opportunity to watch Bednarik give an interview to a local radio show here in Tampa during the last Super Bowl. What a crotchety, jealous, miserable old bastard. All he did was talk about how much money he didn't make and how these soft athletes these days couldn't play in his day, what a sorry game football has turned into, blah blah blah. Lost a lot of respect for him that day. Bitter is a taste not an emotion and green doesn't look good on 80+ year olds Chuck.

He is the only LSU player to ever get the thorpe or bednarik award. He's a two-time 1st Team All-American, and he's only a Junior. If he comes back for another year (which isn't likely) and continued his dominance... I'd say without a doubt that he'd get his number retired on the walls of Tiger Stadium.
As of now, it's not clear. At a minimum, he would have to finish his degree, but I suspect he'd also have to have a tremendous professional career while continuing to support and represent LSU in order to solidify his legacy.
