Just something I thought of this morning and wanted to hear the rant’s thoughts.

New College Football Ranking System: The Points Method

This system ranks college football teams based on performance quality, assigning points for wins and losses based on the opponent’s ranking at the time of the game. The goal is to provide a transparent, week-to-week ranking that rewards strong performances and penalizes poor ones. It would look something like this:

Points for Wins:
• Beat a Top 5 team: +10 points
• Beat a team ranked 6-10: +5 points
• Beat a team ranked 11-15: +3 points
• Beat a team ranked 16-25: +2 points
• Beat a team ranked 26-50: +1 point
• Beat a team ranked 51 or lower: 0 points

Points for Losses:
• Lose to a team ranked Top 25: -1 point
• Lose to a team ranked 26-50: -2 points
• Lose to a team ranked 51-75: -3 points
• Lose to a team ranked 76-100: -4 points
• Lose to a team ranked 101+: -5 points

The two issues I’ve thought of would be the issues early on - the very first poll and the preseason polls moving forward, as well as early season results with multiple teams likely being tied up early on (for example after week 1 there would be 25 teams tied at +1). I’m thinking it would work itself out as the season plays out and the final standings of each year could be the following year’s preseason poll as default. But I’m just curious to see what others think of this. There would be no more room for bias and the results would speak for itself.

It sounded like you were cutting and pasting a potential new system. They are coming out with, not gonna read all that other crap.

A few quibbles:

1. Ranking at the time of the game is not necessarily a good measure of overall quality

2. It doesn't make sense to award the same number of points for beating #1 as #5, but twice as many points for beating #5 as #6.

Nah. Let’s continue the ways of the bcs and over complicate it.
Take the difference of rankings, divide by 3, and assign the points. Then as the season goes, and rankings change, the calculations change, so there is a fluid ranking. On the final ranking, draw straws to get placements of top 25, then recalculate all the rankings. Give Alabama, Ohio state, and ND 26 bonus points because, well, we need them in there. Deduct points for an acc team, give Texas 1/2 point for every time a sports guy says Texas is back, deduct 50 points for every boomer sooner song that is played, and there ya go.

Somehow, yes. It's at least more transparent and objective than a playoff committee.

That should be base points then rerun the points based off of final rankings average. The new total points will give you a more accurate system. This takes care of poll biased early in the year. Example; playing USCw or LSU early would net higher points than playing either one at the end of the year.

Ten points for road wins
Five points for home wins
One point for conference wins

Why not just use RPI? This is basically a dumbed down version.

I was a fan of the computer rankings.

The computers loved LSU.

It’s crazy we don’t have a machine that can calculate wins and losses along with strength of schedules and seeing opponents opponents games. Would seem like that would be good.

Why? So someone like OU can beat one team ranked in the final poll, get blown out in their conference championship game, and still be ranked #1 going into the playoffs?
