Point pulled from T-Bob thread: How much did 1/9/12 hurt future attendance?

I saw someone say that after LSU, which had put together the greatest regular season resume in CFB history, was "rewarded" with having to play the third place team from the SEC that it had already defeated on its home field for the national title, that it caused them to step back and not be as passionate about the team or attending the games. What sayeth the rant: Did 1/9/12 adversely impact the fan base to a point of caring less?
I have noticed the stands emptying a lot easier since the 2011 season than at any time before it. I also have attended less games than I used to and also have stepped back to have a reality check and to care more about the more important things in life. I think part of that is maturity, but part of that also was knowing that Oklahoma State deserved the title game berth that year over Alabama, and that LSU's team was less enthused about an undeserved rematch (and played like it) than it would have been against Oklahoma State. I also think ESPN robbed the game of the Miles-versus-his-previous school storyline to worship Saban - whom they gave an open mic to for the entire weekend of the SEC Championship to promote Alabama - which was so absurd because if they had been deserving they would have been playing that weekend. But I digress...
This thread is NOT about whether Alabama or Okie State deserved to be there, or about the game itself. It is solely about the impact of what happened then on the fan base since then, attendance wise and otherwise.
I'll hang up and listen......

fwiw, if you delete all of that shite about playing bama out, you will get a lot better responses...
to answer your question....I don't think it changed attendance one bit...but it damn sure changed my outlook in that I don't let myself get nearly as emotionally invested in the game/season any more...

You just may have something there !

It's a reasonable argument.
The great fan attendance/passion in CFB and at LSU in particular is largely due to the fact that the regular season is held at high importance. 2011 proved this notion wrong, and so it potentially lessened some fans' passion.

It is a national trend. Stadiums are getting bigger, but fan turn out at games is falling across the country.
I don't think the LSU/Bama game is to blame.

This describes me as well. I was so wrapped up in 2011, and when it all came crashing down 2 years ago, I decided I wasn't letting that happen again. I still go and sit through every game, but I have greatly diminished my emotional investment in LSU football.

you could also mention sec/slive and the bridge schedule of the last two years.
lsu schedule was very difficult.
al schedule was set up for cg run.
thank gawd for auburn and the davis runback.
the ot was already set up for al to win.
go back for years and see how sec has cheated lsu out of chances!
edit: p.s. also, alleva screwed up lobbying for lsu in the mulligan and the bridge schedules. alleva needs to accept the blame/shame.
we need a 30on30 regarding getting screwed by sec.
oh, and those who don't agree with me: gfy

I haven't been to a game since. And I have season tickets. I've given them away.

Since 2009 Bama has been given every break in SEC play. Go watch the tape of the game when a late hit on JJ put him out of the game while LSU was leading. No flag.

I believe this one concise statement is an accurate assessment of my feelings...

LINK
Here is a link from a wall street journal article this past year about UGA's attendance going down and i think it correlates well with LSU attendance.it basically sums up the whole outside of the stadium experience, tv quality improvement, drinking the whole game, etc. has caused people just to not go

This constant bringing up that one game is getting absurd. It sure was a low point for all of us LSU fans. BUT, to keep referring back to that game as some kind fo turning point is crazy. If the effects of that game are still tempering your enthusiasm for LSU football, go ahead and get off the bandwagon.

To answer your question, very little.
Complacency about being good for the last 13 straight seasons is why attendance is less. Damn near everyone has been to every game imaginable in the last 13 years.
Fwiw we didn't sell out our SEC championship allotment in 2011 and that was to see our best team in those 13 years. Why? Been there, done that.

I can only speak for myself, but the debacle of 1/9/12 did something to me. I no longer get as emotionally invested as I once did. Just doesn't seem worth it. So, I imagine many feel the same way and I think that one game has definitely had some repurcussions. While, I wouldn't claim it is the only factor that led to the decline of fan attendance, I would argue it has had an impact.
