Adult male gorillas weigh between roughly 300 to 400 pounds. The reference to the 800 pound gorilla is an old one that has been around for many years, the chainsaw addition was new.

The old saying "so and so is the 800 lb gorilla in the room". As in something really big being ignored. A radio caller, either PF or BK, said LSU was the "800 lb gorilla with a chainsaw for a penis".
