The same question was asked 195270985 times when Trai Turner declared. He was a third round draft pick. No one acknowledged that that was the right decision.

Why do players, who, more than likely won't be drafted or certainly aren't early rounders, continue to leave early. Is it money, bad advice, family? They would surely improve their draft stock with an additional year of college play.

Not going to look it up but I'm certain someone recently started the exact same thread and used the exact same language as the above. We really needed this again. Thanks

Gotta understand also, college isn't for everyone.

Very underrated aspect in this ongoing debate. If you're sick of school, you sure as hell ain't coming back so you can move up 20 spots on Mel Kiper Jr.'s Big Board.

These guys leaving as non first rounders has to stop.

Why?

Hill was a non first round draft pick. The guy could make $500,000 or more for one year. How many years will it take a average guy to make that kind of coin right out of college?

Anyone passing on the money these guys get paid to come back to school for another year are either comfortable because of Mom and Dad or they are fools.

How many college guards were drafted in the top 2 rounds?

This year, just 1, the G from UCLA, first pick of the 2nd round.

It's been asked before but....

People leave early because of multiple reason. Whether it can range from leaving so you don't risk injury in college so it doesn't lower your stock, it could be leaving for the money, it could be leaving to get away from school/home, it could even be because a coach/recruiter made a promise to a recruit that he'd play and you're a roadblock to that promise becoming true.

It's rarely bad advice. Some players leave because they have no choice because they need to support their families. So many of these kids come from families that just aren't wealthy or "average" and need the financial stability soon as possible. If you're referring to Freak, he dropped because of the failed drug test, didn't have overwhelming stats and wasn't a beast in the trenches like we thought he would be coming into the season. I admit I at least thought he'd go before Ego, but the drug test may have messed that up for him. He left because he needed the money to get his daughter/family out of the projects and into a better life, and for that, I commend him.

If you're referring towards one of the big four,(Hill, Mett, Odell or Jarvis), maybe it's because they all wanted to shine in the pros and knew the university wouldn't struggle too badly without them, being how loaded the recruiting class was. Maybe it was because they knew without one, it wouldn't be the same. Odell and Jarvis are like brothers and made a promise to each other to be great and make it to the NFL, they worked their asses off and earned it; so you pretty much knew if one was going to leave then so was the other. You can't hate them for leaving, just part of the process. We now have a set of new toys who can be just as good if not better within the next 3 years.

This is why I don't follow recruiting to a t like most people on here. Sure these kids commit to play at a school, but in all likelihood their main focus is getting to the NFL which entails, leaving early. It's good to see them play for 2 years, but I don't put much stock into it these days.

They need to do the math in terms of the value of getting an education vs the value of a shot at an NFL career. 25/30 signets in a class. Of those 25, 5 will have a good shot at being drafted. Of those 5, 3, at best, will be on an NFL roster 12 months after draft day. So it's about a 1 in 10 chance (and that's at LSU--"NFLU"). That extra year can be worth a good bit if they, contrary to typical behavior, actually try to get an education--even if that education consists of upgrading from a 5th grade level to a 12th grade level of ability.

You think Tahj Boyd regrets going back now, he was a potential 1st pick last year

no he wasn't, and nothing Tahj Boyd did this year on the field negatively affected his draftability. He had essentially ientical numbers as he did last year. He fell to the 6th round because he's short, has average arm strength, accuracy questions, and did not take snaps under center in college. he was never projected to be a 1st round guy

Whose to say Johnson would even be eligible at LSU right now if he's failing drug tests

Turner a first rounder next year on a veteran O-Line where we possibly have the best LT in the country?

Quit bumpin ya gums. Let these kids try to provide for their families and mommas and do what they've dreamed of doing.

A better question is why would you come out to earn a payday for yourself and your family and then screw it up royally by doing drugs?

Anthony Johnson is a life lesson for every other 4 and 5 star on the team. Lesson #1 - the NFL doesn't care about your rivals profile. People's bodies change in three years and the late bloomers catch up to the early bloomers like Freak. Lesson #2 - all the athletic ability in the world will only get you so far (I.e., college, not drafted). You want to be an NFL player, you need to put in the time in the weight room, in the film room, with the coaches, working on your craft. Lesson #3 - Only come out early if you are a first round pick or you have both (a) been a productive player and (b) cannot meaningfully improve your draft stock with another year of training and honing your skills in the college ranks. Lesson #4 - College is fun and people party but once you make the decision to go pro, it's real life and an insanely competitive environment in which every aspect of your game will be picked apart, over analyzed and at times disparaged. Do not be completely stupid and make it easy for someone to drop you on their draft board because you can't tell your buddies "no" when they are passing around a joint.

Anthony Johnson never learned any of the above, and now he is an example for other Tigers to learn from.

I'll admit I am selfish.

I care more about wins and losses at LSU than I do a certain players income.

Fact is we will more than likely never win at the level we all want with the mass exodus of experienced players leaving every year.
I hope I get proven wrong.

Another great response just brimming with content.

There are people on here that are pissed the frick off if we don't win the West every year. There are people on here content with our average 10-11 wins a year. There are people here that are content with anything better than the 90's. There are people that think we should win a national title once every three years or else they are not satisfied.

What is the consensus, in your eyes?

I just don't see how we will beat upper teir SEC schools when we are down 4-5-6 key underclassman every year.
It's starting to add up.
Good chance it'll have a residual effect well see over time.

Good young talent is obv critical, but experience is something you can't measure, especially when we play toughest league in the country,
You may be one of those that's happy with 9-10 win 2-3 loss seasons.....
For me, I gauge seasons success on dec trip to Atlanta not named the check fil a bowl.
