What player surprised you the most this year? While it can be a freshman, i was thinking more along the lines of guys that you thought you had pegged as far as ability goes and they proved you wrong.

For me it has to be Donte Jackson. I honestly thought that he would struggle as CB1. I thought he was fast but not very technically sound and that he was too light to be an efficient tackler. I was Wrong. The guy balled out this year.

who y'all got?

list of overachievers in this thread:
Donte Jackson
Christian LaCouture
Greg Gilmore
Russell Gage
Darrell Williams
Greedy Williams
Saadiq Charles
Devin White
Kevin Tolliver
Corey Thompson
Grant Delpit

Devin White

Didn’t expect him to become the best LB in CFB as a true Sophomore.

Freshman - Greedy

Upperclassman?

Darrel Williams or Lac. I'm a big fan of both players. They exceeded my expectations this year, particularly Lac coming off injuries. He looked rusty early and really had a great back half of the season.

And we needed it.

And White played better than I expected, but more of a mild surprise.

Greedy Williams is a redshirt freshmen and surprised the hell out of everyone. I was surprised by many of the freshmen especially on the O-line. I'd have to say that Kevin Tolliver was a big surprise. He was solid in coverage this year. He struggled last year and was in the doghouse. He's usually had pretty tight coverage, but this year he actually got his head turned around some and made some plays. Was good in run support too. He was good enough to put D-Jax at nickel.

D Williams.

Completely different player from last year. Much quicker, better burst...

Nobody’s said Russell Gage yet?

Weird.

I'll add Greg Gilmore to this thread as well.

He's a guy that I thought was a placeholder last year. I thought he was the best we had so we had to roll with him and that he'd be replaced by Alexander this year.

To his credit, he really improved during the offseason and turned himself into a really nice NT. I was really proud of that guy.

Negatively surprised:
Key - I didn't think it would take so long for him to get back into playing shape
Donnie Alexander - I expected more this season, hoped to be somewhere close to Duke Riley
Stevens - #1 safety. Thought he'd have early impact.

Positively surprised:
Darrell Williams - really stepped up as a senior, bailed us out when Guice was either hurt or struggling
Couture/Gilmore - both had very solid senior seasons beyond expectations
Greedy - Was barely on my radar before this season. If he keeps it up he may be held up as one of our best ever which is insane.

Agree here. I thought Alexander was gonna pass him early in the depth chart.

I’ll go with Charles the freshmen olinemen. Thrown into the fire and really learned quick. Has some work to do, but to hold your own as a true freshman playing oline was big

The only answer is Greedy Williams.

I feel like Gage is the obvious answer. Based his margin of improvement/impact.

Honestly, everyone has a different answer because this team overachieved as whole. That has to be a testament to Coach O and the ENTIRE staff. Gage, Lac, Gilmore, Toliver, Greedy, Daryl Will, delpit, Taylor, the entire O Line, and even Etling.

Despite any haters that say we didn't beat anyone, a potential 10 win season is nothing to laugh at. Are we behind Bama and Clemson, sure, but the guys play hard and the team chemistry seems rock solid.

What's kind of funny about this thread is that so many on the rant are acting like we didn't have a good year because of the early season woes and what seems like 1/4 of the starters have been named in this thread as performing better than what we expected.

just thought that was interesting

I'll second Gage, he was lost under the previous regime and the week after Miles was fired he had a role and was contributing and was solid his sr year.
