Its hard to tell if Maravich would be as dominant today. I think the athletes today could keep him in check unfortunately.

The shot clock (which wasn't around when Pete played so teams like Tennessee could just hold the ball for several minutes each possession to keep Pete from getting his points) and the 3 point shot would have helped Maravich score more.

I read somewhere that someone went back and analyzed film of Pete's shots and something like 30% of his made shots would have been three pointers thus adding between 8 and 10 points to his average.

It's mentioned at the 2:00 mark of this video clip:

It does if you factor into the equation that a lot of his points came from the foul line.

I read a couple of years ago that it was Dale Brown who went back and documented all of Maravich's shots.

I'm sure he'd bulk up some if he played today

Hard to argue though. What if PM had the training and diet/supplementation knowledge we have now? Theoretically he would be a "better" athlete. Not to mention, seems like much of his success was about practice and hard work.

What is the #1 record?

Pete Maravich's career scoring average of 44.2 points per game.

and that was without a three point shot line......Pete was the 1st to wear the famous 23 that MJ wore.

He scored at will, and I didn't check the record books but I imagine he holds the record for most attempts. No three point line and no shot clock? Just insane. His book is a great read as well. He battled a lot of internal demons apparently. Basketball was his escape.

What's #1? Back to back no hitters?

If its just BBall then I would say UCLA's 7 straight titles.

"I think the athletes today could keep him in check unfortunately."

It took a perfect storm for Pete to do what he did: insane talent - perhaps the best hands anyone has ever seen; incredible hard work; playing for his dad and having a full time green light. So, I think it probably is fair to say that things would be different now. But I doubt they would be all that different. Look at the film. Who has EVER made passes quite like that? And I give you this: In 1976-77, playing in a fully integrated NBA with players who would unquestionably stack up nicely today (recall that the league has fewer teams), Pete led the NBA in scoring with 31 ppg. Maravich would have been a great player in any era.

I think he would still be unstoppable, but would not average 44. He would not average 38 shots per game. That is alot of shots.

I don't see the guy approaching Lebron or Durant. I'm sorry but I don't see him eclipsing Steve Nash's prime. Nash won two MVPs but I still think Nash prime vs. Maravich prime...Nash wins everytime.

found these tidbits that only strengthen his claim to G.O.A.T.ness.
quote:

First, NCAA rules at the time of Maravich's collegiate career prohibited freshmen from taking part in varsity competition, preventing Maravich from adding to his career record for a full quarter of his time at LSU. During this first year, Maravich scored 741 points in freshman competition. Second, Maravich played before the advent of the three-point line. His long-distance shooting skill thus produced far fewer points than would have been the case in a later era. Years later, former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots he took. Brown calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot (5.8 m), 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, lifting the player's career average to 57 points per game.[8]

Statements like that make me hate the internet. Nash would slap your lips for that

Wikipedia says that LSU coach Dale Brown charted all of Pete's games just to see. He calculated that with a 19' 9" 3-point line, his average would've been 57 PPG.
