Wondering if South Carolina fans will ever learn how to spell his name right

This hire more than anything else makes me wonder if there’s something about Cliff Godwin that turns ADs off. He’d seem like a slam dunk hire for USCe
I thought the same thing, but did some research. Cliff grew up 30 minutes away from ECU in a tiny town called Snow Hill (1,000 people), played at ECU, and has his entire extended family there where he makes half a million a year and they are highly satisfied with the results.
I think he's going to coach there another 15 years (he's 46) and retire a happy, content man.

Billy Godwin made 1 Super Regional in 9 years and won his conference 1 time (same year). The didn't even make the postseason in 3 out of his last 5 years there.
Cliff Godwin (no relation) in 9 years has:
4 Super Regional appearances
5 Conference Championships (the last 5 straight)
3 Conference Tournament Titles
Overall Records:
Billy Godwin: 314-214-1 / 122-98-1
Cliff Godwin: 397-187-1 / 148-74-1
Cliff will get a big time gig eventually. He's still only 46 years old.

He flirts with big jobs almost every year. He's not staying there forever.

Big programs call him and media outlets claim he's a finalist. That is different. We have no idea what kind of "flirting" he does.

It’s a strange hire. Plus Tanner and Manure are near the same age - Tanner actually a few months younger. Bizarre
Carolina had their version (somewhat) of Skip in Tanner. After he retired to become AD (like Skip) they did like LSU and turned the program over to someone who was an assistant during the prime of the program. It didn't produce the same results. They then went the mid-major route with Kingston. It still didn't produce championship level results.
I see this hire as being similar to Arkansas hiring John Calipari in basketball. Like Cal, Mainieri was winning at LSU. His last 5 seasons were: Super Regional, CWS, Regional, Super Regional, Super Regional. He just wasn't winning "enough" for a program with significant championship history and championship expectations.
Kentucky's AD wasn't going to fire Cal after this past season. But he, Cal, and the fanbase all knew the relationship at run its course and that baring something totally unexpected that day was coming soon. So Cal bailed for a good opportunity at a program that would be excited to have him. Same for Mainieri. Woodward likely wasn't going to fire him after the 2021 season. But the fanbase had grown tired of him and wasn't going to be upset if a move was made. Mainieri saw the writing on the wall and chose to leave on his own accord. But I don't think he truly wanted to stop coaching.
In basketball Arkansas gets a (to be) 66 year old championship pedigree HC who they know (likely) won't be there for a decade. But who they hope can quickly elevate the program. Same for South Carolina here.

maybe he likes money
Maybe he and his wife would rather live in Carolina than Louisiana.

Certainly hope I'm not looking for a job when I'm 67.

But what if a job is looking for you and offers you $1.5m a year for 3 years?

It would need to be much more than that.
