247 shows that MM recruited 5 of Murray State’s best ever recruits, so he must be a good recruiter. The best ever rated recruit was rated 0.9. The caliber of players he’ll be able to get at LSU are far higher, but he beat the heck out of Belmont twice this year with much less talent than LSU. Same margin of victory, and Belmont went to the NIT. Murray State had one bad loss to East Tenn in their 4th game of the season, 1 expected loss by 13 points to Auburn, and a loss to a hot St. Peter’s team that may not be bad depending on how St Peter’s does in their next game. The 31-3 record is impressive. Undefeated in conference is impressive. That’s only the 2nd time in Murray State history. Will Wade’s best record at VCU was 26-9, and several other VCU coaches have done better. The other 4 recent VCU coaches (Rhoades, Smart and Grant) have all had a at least one better season. Prohm proves that there are no guarantees, but MM seems like a good bet.

Well I don't disagree with anything here.
My point is that big conferences raid mid-majors all the time and it doesn't always work out. You can just never tell if a coach is going to translate to a bigger conference.
Yep. For every Billy Donovan (Marshall to Florida), Bruce Pearl (UW-Milwaukee to Tennessee), there are several Johnny Jones's, John Pelphrey, Tony Barbee, Anthony Grant, etc.
But you also have the other side of the coin where "big names" from big programs don't work out. Trent Johnson (Stanford to LSU); Avery Johnson (NBA to Alabama); Billy Gillespe (A&M to Kentucky); Tom Crean (Indiana to Georgia); Ben Howland (UCLA to Mississippi St.)
As simplistic as it sounds, often times is just a matter of the right guy, at the right place, at the right time.

I like the hire, I’m just surprised it happened so quickly. I thought SW would go for a white whale first. But if he got his guy this quickly, maybe CMM is the white whale.

I think Woodward wanted to act quickly to help reduce the player losses. I think MM can now start recruiting current players and the recently de committed. If he has waited several weeks, those players would’ve been a lot more likely to bolt. It may not eliminate the losses, but it was the only hope to reduce the losses. Plus, MM is a good candidate, even under normal circumstances. Under better circumstances, there might be better candidates, but I think Woodward did great under our circumstances.

When there's so many lines in the barrel and so few quality fish, you reel in the best you can. I think we got a keeper.
