Pass to WR in the flat

It's Leavitt's bread and butter play and it rarely fails to pick up yards. Moreover a lot of other teams run it and it's nearly always successful. I wonder if there's something about current college defenses that makes them susceptible to that particular play.

It's a nice play. Watkins does well with it and I think Tre can, as well.
The best part about it is it stretches the defense out, keeping the safeties from cheating in the running game and the intermediate passing game.

I’ve noticed a lot of teams love soft zone. Bama and UGA included.

If db is giving a cushion, spread teams will throw this in hopes the receiver can catch it, square up, to make the db miss the initial tackle
The qb has to throw it with some zip to give the receiver time
The vols throw this plenty

Teams play two high safeties a bunch so it’s usually easy yards. Even if they play man the offense can still beat them with numbers.

It really just depends on how the defense is playing. If the safeties are protecting deep, these plays tend to have more success. But if the safeties are creeping up, you'll find these plays less successful. Conversely, if they're creeping up, they're more suceptible to the deep pass. Pick your battle. Would you rather give up the big play or die by 1000 cuts? Very few defenses have the players to cover both well. You need a lot of speed at the LB spot, too.

The vols also like to spread their WRs out even further than most offenses do. This helps create even more space by spreading out the defense. As you stated, it requires a QB with a very strong arm. Otherwise, you have a QB lobbing passes right in front of defenders with more time to react because the ball has further distance to travel.

I'd love to see them utilize the Mothership in this package

I like when we go 5 wide and throw it quick to jones.
