LSU was winning in the 50's, 60's, and a good part of the 70's.

That is an ignorant statement. Does LSU have the hardware that Notre Dame and USC has? No. Has LSU been winning for 90% of our history as a football program? Yes. We are right outside of top ten of all time football program wins.

I think you've been listening to those Cajun fans over there a bit too much.

. . . and 30's.

The 1936 LSU team was likely the best in the country. Undefeated at 9-0-1 during the regular season, LSU was voted #2 by the (Minnesota based) inaugaral AP Poll behind a 1 loss Minnesota team.

The poll was skewed so heavily toward Minnesota that when UM lost to Northwestern November 2, 1936, they only dropped to #2 and still received 10 (out of 43) 1st place votes. The "Final" 1936 AP Poll determining Minnesota as "#1" was concluded immediately following Minnesota's last game and before LSU's final regular season game --- a 33-0 drumming of #19 Tulane the following week. Draw your own conclusions.

I travell the country in my semi, believe me LSU is well respected and thought of as a giant in CF. I was in Iowa City IA. the week before the Auburn game, and a man saw my LSU cap and started asking me about the Tigers. When someone in Iowa can name just about every tiger in the starting lineup, that speaks respect!!

I live in the Chicago, IL area. My friends and co-workers are almost entirely Big Ten fans. So you can imagine the discussions we have had (SEC vs. Big Ten) the past few years. Here's their take:

LSU's D-Line is big, strong and plays the run well but does not appear to pressure the QB. Most of LSU's sacks and QB hurries are from blitzing backers or safeties. He loves our running game and ranks it the best in the country with Wisconsin's running game #2. Wis.Fan

LSU plays as a Team. No hot dogs or show boats. Can't say the same for UF. SEC "speed" is over rated but the offensive and defensive linemen appear to be better athletes than their counterparts in other conferences. SEC has better passing game due to weather. In Big Ten, it is tough to throw the football during blustery Nov. football games. OSU Fan

LSU is the most athletic team over the past 5 years. They recruit better athletes at traditionally non-athletic positions. This guy referenced our place kicker being faster than most running backs: He was talking about the USC game last year. IL fan.

LSU does not dominate games but always seems to be position to win. This guy said he could not remember LSU ever getting "blown out". However, he also said LSU doesn't "bury" teams either and if there were more 35-0 games against conference opponents (like USC produces), LSU would be the premier team in college ball. This guy ranks best programs as USC, OSU and then LSU in that order. OSU fan.

In general and it may be because they know I'm and LSU Tiger, this group would rather lose to LSU than any other SEC Team. They say LSU is the classiest of the SEC Teams. Without exception, UF is the most disliked.

Well, my 78-year old aunt is a rabid OU fan, and she said that if OU had to lose the BCSNC, she was glad it was to us.

Now, living in Cajun country, the feelings aren't so nice. If we (LSU) existed in the same universe as UL, I would feel bad about all the animosity. Now, though, I'm tired of all the hate from UL. I used to pull for them when they weren't playing us, but I'm so sick of their shite. I really hate them now. I will never pull for UL, regardless of the competition. One of my friends was an OSU fan and he said there were only two teams he pulled for: OSU and whoever was playing OU. Now that's my mentality about UL. I pull for LSU and whoever is playing UL. I know I shouldn't hate such a sub-par team/school, but I'm so fed up with them and their whiny-arse selves. Did I mention that I hate them?

Most folks I know from that area pull for both LSU and ULL. When, if ever, did the ULL folks start hating on LSU so bad?

We seem to be under-respected. Simply put. My family are from Texas, some live in New Mexico and one goes to Alabama. The Texas folk love UT but have an odd admiration for LSU. It's like they wish they had the prosperity we had (Mack is AWFUL). New Mexico doesn't even know what LSU means but would recognize USC, OU, OSU in a heartbeat. In Alabama they respect LSU now but thinks Les is a total jerk, arrogant, lucky, etc.

There's no doubt we are the most successful team of the 2000's with no close second place (sorry USC). But the views of others is based on what the media shows them. If you watch the 07 NCG the commentator is almost suprised LSU won at the end of the game despite us clearly dominating; this is just one example.

But in the words of another poster, who cares what everyone thinks; we'll continue to be great for the foreseable future. So enjoy shutting idiots down in public and the look on their faces when they realize just how good we've actually been.

It's a great time to be a TIGER

Keep in mind I have lived on both coasts and all over the USA. The very broad answer to this question is that most people in big cities arent very aware of LSU at all. All the time people ask me what LSU stands for. After I explain Louisiana State University I could usually get them to understand that is where Shaq went to school.

You have to realize that even serious sports fans in the Boston area would struggle to name the head coach of BC. Its just not on the radar. There arent major college football programs in the big cities in America outside of USC. NYC, Boston, Philly, Blatimore, DC, Chicago etc dont have big time football programs.

Among sports fans LSU has gained tons of exposure in the last 10-15 years. Before cable TV not so much. LSU still isnt Tenn, Miami, FSU, UNC and so on. I can say this based on the merchandise I see on the shelves in stores. When I see a guy wearing LSU gear they usually have a connection with the school in some way.

Here in RI I know a lot of teens through work and they tell me they are UF, OSU, USC, ND fans though they have no connection to the school. I really havent met many if any people in my travels who are LSU fans or know much about LSU without some sort of physical connection to the state or institution.

Now CFB fans that I meet do have lots of respect (most of it new found) for LSU and its sports programs.

We hate you too. All of those Lafayette fans that make the trip over the Atchafalaya for LSU game day and then fill I-10 again on the way home. The rest of the LSU graduates that live outside of Baton Rouge hate you too. Quit whining and man up. Or better yet, move back to Baton Rouge so that you don't have to mix with those lower class football fans.

Don't expect the rest of the state to kiss your arse because you went to LSU. And for God's sake, quit being a little bitch.

The response that I've gotten the most as I travel through the south is that LSU has had a "lucky" five or six years.

Nothing about Saban or Miles, just that LSU hasn't deserved their success.

Why it hasn't dawned on them that you have to have a great team to take advantage of all of those lucky opportunities is beyond me.

Controversial entry into the BCS Championship? Some luck involved. Pasting the opposing team once you got there? Championship earned.

Getting into the BCSC with two losses? Lots of luck. Thrashing Ohio State? Looks like LSU deserved to be there.

Fixed it for you!

Face it, before Saban and the turn of the Millenium, LSU has been a second tier SEC program during its entire history.

As a second tier SEC program, we could win an SEC championship once a decade if the stars aligned just right.

Who would you rate as "top tier"?

It's a matter of record that LSU grads pay more federal taxes than ULL grads.

The problem with your logic is that you see success only in terms of winning an SECC. That's simply not true. For a football progam, a winning season,a bowl game, an SEC West championship, a BCS bowl, a New Years Day bowl, these are all defined as successes for a modern CFB program. I would say that LSU has been fairly successful (except for 92-97) in that regard.

I get almost 100% positive comments when I'm wearing my Tiger gear here in Orlando. Not only do people respect our success, but they really like the Tigers' ballsy style of play. As I've said before, over the past couple years, LSU plays the games people talk about on Monday. Thank the team and Les Miles for that!

Did you not catch the point where I said I USED to pull for ULL? If you guys didn't hate so much, I would STILL pull for ULL. I'm just tired of your shite. Seems like the whiny-asses are in full force on this side of the Atchafalya. And I'm tired of people saying we should move to BR. I love Lafayette; I happen to hate you pansy-asses who complain about LSU getting money and having better sports and Lafayette residents who pull for LSU. There are plenty of people who live in BR who pull for ULL. Should they move to Lafayette?

I'm a Florida fan, but I think that opinion is very understandable. All you have to do is compare LSU's post BCS title game comments to Florida's from the year before.

I would admit proudly. The two best teams didn't get to meet up to battle it out. As far as I am concerned LSU+BCS and USC=AP

Well I grew up during the glory years of Spurrier, and so my first impression of LSU was an also-ran, chalk up a W.

Since Saban however, I've been afraid of LSU. Miles is continuing great recruiting and coaching, and this game decides a lot of the winner of the west/east. Glad we have this game locked in year in and year out.
