If you like being competitive but never getting over the hump then Beth Torina is your gal. She's so good at it.
The sport has been dominated by a handful of elite programs. Outside of those schools, how many coaches have gotten over the hump, as you put it? Since 1988, all but 4 titles have been won by UCLA, Arizona, Oklahoma, Florida, Arizona St, Washington or Alabama. Fresno St won in 1998, Cal in 2002, Michigan in 2005 and Florida St in 2018. Fresno St was a power back before the SEC and other conferences started taking the sport seriously. Their coach managed one title in 27 seasons as the Fresno St coach. Carol Hutchins has one title in 37 years at Michigan. Diane Ninemire won 1 in 33 years at Cal. Lonnie Alameda is in her 14th season at FSU, finally “getting over the hump” in her 10th season. What evidence do you see in any of that that there is some large pool of coaches out there capable of “getting over the hump”?

Most would say Fouts is the best pitcher in the SEC easily. After Fouts Delce and Penta are both having solid years. After those two I would put four pitchers in the next group in no particular order Kilfoyl, Hightower, Kilponen and Haff. Herzog and Spangler would be after that group.
That’s a fair assessment. Kilponen is in the upper half of the conference among the #1 starters, so “middle of the road” was underselling her a little bit. My point was that she was not dominant enough to carry the team.

Seventeen hits against the #10 team in the country. Pretty damn good!
