The team that won was 2-3 going in, having given up 67 points in one of their losses.

ETA - And had a losing season lest year. Maybe the firing wasn't just about this game.

Should he have been fired? Seems a bit harsh unless there were prior incidents

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say the kind of guy doing that on a football field likely had some existing issues with school admins

That's messed up to. Some coaches have been fired for doing that exact thing.

I am a coach and I would never tell my kids to stop playing hard. I would just change my strategy. Put in your 3rd string. In football, kick it deep, run the. ball 90% of the time, play very basic defense.

In basketball, go into half court man or zone. Play 3rd string. Tell your team to do so many passes before a shot.

In these scenarios, I would still expect the players on the field or floor to keep playing as hard as they could and just follow the new gameplan. If they are still kicking the other team's arse, then so be it.

I don’t have a problem with it. It’s good to get some practice in vs another team when you’re able

When Vandergriff was coaching Prince Avenue with his son, Brock, at QB, followed by Philo, he ran up the score padding stats to the point that schools refused to play them.

PACS had to start traveling out of state for games.

I don't understand what's so hard to understand here, if he kept running his team/offense as normal to get practice reps etc, some people might still call him a dick but he certainly wouldn't be fired.

Going out of his way and having multiple onside kicks is the main issue here. It's not rocket science.

Background: the guy was undefeated and won state in his first year, went 4-6 last year and was 3-3 this year. The game was getting chippy and I guess he said frick it. Supposedly the backup kicker was in who couldn't get it to the end zone.

Re the onside kicks, Avoyelles always kicks onside and also goes for it on 4th down nearly every damn time.

Chippy in the first half against a team of 16.

Yeah, if that's their baseline and they keep doing that in a blowout, some people might take issue with it but it's easily defensible.
