Good recap

Just for some perspective, slots tomorrow begin just under $2MM and are down to around 500K by the beginning of round 4. Obviously teams can save elsewhere then throw an over slot deal out there and nothing is definite until the deadline, but we should start to see how things are shaping up within the first couple hours.

Florida had 3 signees drafted in the 1st round. That’s crazy assuming all 3 sign and they could have others drafted early tomorrow.

So no LSU players in round 1 is good right?

LSU players in the first round would be great.
We just don’t want signees there.

If you are a player that gets drafted you are signing
With 5 and 20 round drafts it’s time to get into an organization to start professional career
There will also be some free agent signings as well and someone like gio could go that route

Yes anything is possible but someone after rounds 10-20 doesn’t mean their leaving my dude. Some kids want to experience college and up their draft stock into the top 5 rounds

If that's the case, they will communicate it to the scout that calls them ahead of the team's pick to gauge their interest. There are going to be very few blind picks this year. Guys that get picked are almost guaranteed to sign.
They don't have 30 non slotted picks anymore, they have 10. When resources are limited, you take less chances.

Listened to a d1baseball pod yesterday and mike rooney set the over/under of average number of drafted guys that sign at 12.5 per team on average. I thought that was really low, and kendall and fitt both took the over but said they thought it would be close. Rooney’s reasoning was with all these organizations cutting players last year during covid, they wouldnt have much room in their systems for the players. I thought the number would be closer to 16.5 personally

Ok I gotcha that makes sense. I’m hoping we atleast get Selvidge on campus out of the top pictures. It’ll be a long shot with Kudrna

Them cutting players last year due to expense still wouldn’t make sense, because 80% of the guys in the MiLB are basically place holders with no value. Not sure why they wouldn’t want to get fresh blood with potential and cut the 26 year old with a 4.5 ERA rather than just mailing in picks.

It’s probably less about the players they cut and more about the smaller number of teams. 12.5 still seems a little low but there’s going to be a lot less roster filler required in each organization.

Each org is capped at 180 minor leaguers now, domestically.
Some teams have already started making their cuts, but that's going to be the biggest limiting factor.
But the cuts from Covid created a player shortage this season that forced teams to sign more Indy League guys than ever before. And that caused a big shortage in Indy Leagues.

Ouch, that's a rough day 1 for Florida

Man there were teams going over this? How many players does a major league team have in their farm system at once? I was thinking way less than 180.

When short season leagues started up most organizations were populating at least 7 minor league rosters.

It used to be something like this:
AAA - 25
AA - 25-27
High A - 25-27
Low A - 27
Short A - 25-27
Rookie Away - 25-27
Rookie complex - 30+
Plus other unassigned guys.
Not every org had teams at every level, but some had more than one complex team.
MLB decided to allow the cheapest orgs set the tone for the minors instead of letting all the orgs do what they felt was necessary. The Yankees had close to 12 affiliates between all the domestic leagues and in the Dominican. If they are okay spending the money, why limit them?
ETA: I don't like that they pushed the time of day that the draft starts. I'm so ready for it to begin.
