1.Watkins
2.Landry
3.Dean
Watkins is a lefty isn't he? If so Mainieri may want to put a righty in that second spot(at least when facing a southpaw).

Who ever bats second will stand there and take 2 pitches as he lets Trey Watkins steal second and third and then he can go ahead and make contact on the third pitch.
Not counting pitch outs of course which there will be plenty of!

Third Base
Wet Delatte (RFr.)*
Alex Edward (Fr.)
While at first glance this position seems to be that one weak link in the lineup. Delatte in my opinion will not only surprise the tiger nation with his glove, but with his bat sooner than most expect. LSU has not had a 3rd baseman start for the majority of two seasons since the late Wally Pointiff Jr. over seven years ago. Nobody has seen very much of Delatte since his high school days where he was a standout at St. Amant. Going into last year Mainieri had a plan in redshirting him hoping to get four solid years out of this sturdily built infielder. An additional feature that Wet brings is the added presence of a left-handed bat that is much needed in the lineup. I look for Mainieri to give him a chance to get settled in before giving younger players a chance realizing Delatte’s potential to become an All-SEC caliber player early in his career. Delatte does not have the spectacular range or extraordinary play ability deep in the hole yet; however he is a sure hand to make the routine plays with comfort at this early stage. Alex Edward another born and raised young Baton Rouge talent will serve as a backup role and depending on the play from the infielders in front of him will determine whether or not he’s redshirted.

I thought Didier was a 3B also?

Didier will be a backup but I think he's eventually going to find his spot at DH.

Do you see him being somewhat like Nola was last year? Solid on D, but not hitting for a great average?
Posted on 2/5/10 at 6:25 pm to AllEyesOnThree
he's going to hit for a better average his first year than Nola did, but I like Nola more as a defensive prospect.

I think Nola's going to break out big time at the plate this year. He handles the bat as well or better than anyone else on the team and I think it will translate into a higher BA than it did last season.

Outfield
Leon Landry (Jr.)*
Trey Watkins (So.)*
Mikie Mahtook (So.)*
Johnny Dishon (RSo.)
Kyle Keonenman (Jr.)
How fast is Trey Watkins? The former defensive back from Destrehan stole 55 bases last year at LSU-Eunice and is now the leading candidate for the starting centerfielder position on the reigning national champion LSU Tigers. The starting lineup should look something similar to Landry and Watkins sharing leftfield and centerfield duties with Mahtook in right field. Personally I think Watkins is a more fluid centerfielder with a tad more speed (yeah just a tad), but we have to remember Landry made about 3 sports center highlight reels in one weekend against UC-Irvine. Dishon a seasoned outfield will get major at bats sometimes even platooning with Leon against left-handed pitchers. Landry going into this year is pegged as a potential top 3 round draft pick purely based upon his physical tools. After hitting nine homeruns in what seemed like the first fifth of the season Landry cooled off considerably and eventually lost his starting spot. This season his past struggles have built motivation for Landry to hit not aiming for the fences, but to raise his on base percentage and create problems for the pitcher. Mahtook a five tool outfielder who worked his way into the lineup midseason is most notably known for hitting in the game winning run in the first game of the national championship series against Texas. When describing Mahtook you can’t point out something in his game that stands alone from the rest. He plays with his heart on his sleeve every pitch and is never afraid to show emotion providing sparks in late game situations which is why he will be one of the leaders on this young but talented ballclub. Watkins, the final piece to the puzzle, brings natural speed and big play cover in the outfield one that more naturally suits him in the middle compared to Landry and Mahtook. Johnny Dishon a redshirt sophomore had an incredible summer and is the main backup for all three positions. Mainieri was quoted saying he will play around 40 games in relief of starters and in mop up duties. Kyle Keonenman if not getting a shot at DH or 1B will be a backup in RF.

I'm so pumped about this season. I honestly believe we'll have the best outfield in the SEC. They will make our pitchers look even better than they are... and at least 2-3 of them are good regardless. The opposition is going to have to resort to bloopers and homeruns with maybe a couple infield hits that killed us last year. If we can generate any offense period, which I have no doubt we will, we should continue to be the team to beat.

Trey Watkins looks gigantic in that picture.

Dean sat out today for some reason. Koeneman played 1st for both teams. Bradshaw and bourgeois started. Both looked good but Bradshaw walked a few. Mormann came in and showed potential but had control issues. I think he can be special eventually. Kinda reminds me of ranaudo as a freshman with a little less velocity. Lasuzzo came in and pitched and looked good from what I saw. I think he can be a great LHP for middle relief. I beleive the pitching staff will be more reliable this year. If matulis or bourgeois can step up and become the weekend starter we need, we should be ok.
Watkins, Gibbs, and mahtook each had a double today with some nice hits in the gaps and down the line. Watkins and mahtook stole a base every chance they got. Landry looked sick swinging the bat and still needs patience.

Great stuff Adam. I'm pumped for the season. Anxious to see Watkins and what he can do.

This thread really jacks you up!!
This outfield is scary. And if these guys hit consistently, that's alot of speed on the basepaths. If I were an opposing catcher, i'd just say "ehh screw it" and let them steal the base. Our guys should create some errors for the other teams.
Adam:
Great job as always.

I'm pretty sure this sums up a great deal of our offensive philosophy. Which is awesome.

Designated Hitter
Matt Gaudet (Sr.)*
Beau Didier (RFr.)
Kyle Keonenman (Jr.)
Matt Gaudet wasn’t a part of the team that dog piled on the pitchers mound last year in Omaha nor was he a key member of that lineup. Mainieri had to make a difficult decision last year even before the start of the season by cutting Gaudet then a one year letterman out of Delgado Community College. Due to ongoing changes the NCAA has been cutting teams’ player totals to a set 35 man roster. Mainieri did however make a promise to Gaudet early last year. If Matt continued to work hard in the offseason and leave his option open to come back that there would be a spot for him on the 2010 team. Both parties agreed and Gaudet is now in better shape than he was two years ago when he only managed to hit 2 homeruns the entire season before sitting out the rest of the year indefinitely with a back injury. Along with Gibbs and Dean, Matt will be counted upon to drive in runs in the middle of the lineup and use his tremendous upper body strength to hit the long ball, something he had a hard time figuring out in the past. Unlike every other position Designated Hitter is going to be up for completion for the most part until SEC play gets rolling in March. Behind Gaudet are two players with much higher ceilings and pro potential, but that doesn't really scare Gaudet. What Didier and Keonenman don’t have is at bats besides that one at bat missile that was launched in the art building parking lot over Nicholson by Didier early in February of last year. I’m very high on Didier for many different reasons; he’s got a strong left-handed swing and has opposite field gap power that outlasts Nola and Delatte at the same age in their careers. If Didier gets inserted at DH and gets hot, it’s going to be his job to lose. Definitely a position of uncertainly and is the top priority of the coaching staff in spring practice.
