People aren't saying you won't get better with use of a Jugs machine. They're saying the problem with our guys may go beyond access to a Jugs machine.

Again, I'm not talking about circus catches. I'm talking about the drops we've all seen that are in the 5 feet by 5 feet "strike zone" that should almost never be dropped. These are the easiest catches to improve. And all of those are not easy catches without a lot of practice. For instance - High and reaching back and low and reaching back give some guys problems until they grab a couple thousand of them. Then it becomes reflex muscle memory.

Right now, LSU has guys dropping passes on the numbers.

The thread where a bunch of old fat guys who never caught a ball on a jugs machine debate the merits of using one while also using a third party story with little context to condemn past and current coaches.

So just another day on the rant.

Think it was Peyton that said your season performance reflects the time spent in the off season. These Tigers put in the work and being paid handsomely for the effort.

The fact that Landry and Odell had to break into the equipment room to use the Jugs says something about Mile's program.

And in your opinion, you feel as though the offensive coaching staff, led by the best OC in the country, have overlooked training as fundamental as catching from a Jugs machine?

Clearly, Sullivan overlooked it.

And if they aren't doing it now (which is what I heard, but can't confirm) then, yeah. It falls on O, E, Brady, and S&C.

This isn't 3 yards and a cloud of dust any more. If you're gonna have an elite passing game, you have to practice like the elites do.

Players are gifted with skills - some are fast, some are strong, some have great hands, etc. Practice can maximize those skills, but they can't create them.

you cant do a whole lot about your speed, if you are slow you are slow and if fast you are fast, but you can do something about your hands. Putting in the time on a jugs machine can go a long way in developing good, or even great, hands. That is the point. Our WR's (and TE's and RB's and DB's as well) need to be putting in that time.

that is reality

Sure, but you have to have the physical attributes as well.

OBJ was gifted with huge hands, even by NFL standards. Practice helps but even with catching physical attributes matter. All of the time spent with the Jugs machine isn't going to fix small hands if that's the problem.

It would be awesome if developing great hands became a tradition here at LSU for our WR's following in the path paved by OBJ and Landry by working in off hours and off season on a jugs machine. While it can't be mandated it can be made easily accessible and encouraged to be part of the culture of our team

While not every WR will develop the hands (most wont) to the degree OBJ and Landry were able to, they ALL can greatly improve their catching ability by putting in the work

Hand size is A factor. But a minor one compared to reps. And a guy with tiny hands probably isn't on scholarship as a WR at LSU.

Most elite NFL pros do about 200 reps a day all year. That's 73,000 a year. In 3 years, that's 212,000 reps. That guy will know things about his craft (consciously and unconsciously) that a WR who is casual about practice (with maybe 3 or 4 thousand reps) couldn't dream of.

Would love to see those 2 elites come back to LSU for a couple hours and talk to the receivers about how they set up their practice regimens (and how they had fun with it)

Maybe even on skype or something similar.

but can still be developed to where you are sure handed enough to never drop the easy catches and be competitive on difficult catches. If hands are that small then probably should try another sport or position.

I agree, a WR (an any other player interested) get together with those 2 about how they used the machine and how they made it competitive and fun while doing it

Hand size doesn't make all that much difference on two-handed catches. And those are the catches that we're talking about mostly.

Sure, makes a very big difference in the one-handed grabs that Odell and Jarvis make. And make them look easy.

With increased practice, hands get better. This really isn’t debatable.
of course, and I don’t deny that.

i’m merely saying that there’s a limit to how much better hands can get, regardless of how much a player practices.
