A) It is anything but obvious. See (b).

B) Pelini was not an experiment- he was supposed to be long term, steady, and solid. See (c).

C) There's lots of built in excuses that are also pseudo-reasons to "explain it away". See (a)

But what have we seen that would give anyone hope he can turn it around? We haven't had 1 game this season you could point to and say we saw any real improvement from the defense.

People said the south carolina game but there really wasn't much improvement on the defensive side. The offense just dominated the time of possession so badly in that game that south carolina didn't have the ball much. But when they did they gashed the defense and made big plays like everyone else.

Then you have the aspect that the players don't seem to play very hard for him. Whatever the reasons may be for that we don't know, but its very troubling and if it continues I just dont see how you keep the guy around. I understand you don't want to be too over reactionary but there just isn't really anything positive to find that would lead you to believe he can get this defense fixed at this point.

Don't get me wrong, I'm anything but advocating for keeping Pelini. I'm just stating that it isn't a foregone conclusion.

I don't. The "we don't have the right people for a 4-3" reason doesn't even remotely pass the smell test, for multiple reasons. So if it isn't a personnel reason, then "hope" isn't an option. We have what will eventually be regarded as 2 of the best 10 CBs in the nation (Stingley 1 or 2 and Ricks will certainly be regarded as a top-10) but yet do not play to or leverage that strength schematically and have one of the worst pass defenses in the nation. That just shouldn't happen. Period. Whatever problems are causing that aren't going to disappear when the last digit in the date changes to 1.

Agreed, wholeheartedly. And that was and is the metric we and CEO and Woodward should be looking at. With our talent level PLUS the excuses/reasons being used to prop up Bo the one thing you should see is improvement. Steady and in rather large steps. But it isn't there, much less steady and not in large steps. Experience, coaching, and practice should erase all those excuses such as no spring and the defense "catch up". It isn't happening. I think the reason is lack of coaching.

Coaching matters. Don't look at us, look at Arkansas. Want to see what a team with bad recruiting and even worse coaching looks like? Look at Arkansas with Morris and Fat Bert recruiting. Look what they are doing with bad recruiting w/Morris+Fat Bert. It matters.

At some point that has to reflect that he's not good at evaluating coaches.

Agree. He needs to quit asking Pete Carroll for advice on coaching hires. Be your own man.

O knows he's screwed if he can't jettison Pelini. Far and away O's worst hire. He deserves all the heat he is getting for making the hire. He made it though and deserves the returns he's getting from it.
