O shrinks in big moments

For all of the meaningless platitudes and empty bravado he spouts, when given the chance to be bold and go for the throat over the course of 3 years, O has cowered in the moment.

2016: Sugar Bowl birth on the line vs. Fla. Down 16-10, Etling leads a do or die drive 60+ yards to the Florida 7 (including a big 4th and 10 conversion). With 4 chances to win the game, LSU runs it into the teeth of the defense 4 times. No play action or attempt to throw the ball into the endzone. 4 predictable plays in route to the Capital One Bowl.

2017: Tied 14 all with 2 minutes to go in the Cap One Bowl vs. ND. For all intents and purposes the game is meaningless as win or lose, the season is over. Yet, on the heels of a would be 77 yard go ahead drive, O chooses to kick a FG from the 1 yard line on 4th down. At worst, a failed 4th and 1 attempt makes ND have to go, at least, 65 yards with no TO's for a FG try in the rain. It was the ultimate no lose situation for O. It's not like the outcome of the game would make or break LSU's playoff chances. The season was over either way. Yet, when presented with an opportunity to be bold, he shrunk. ND gets a TD to beat you.

2018: Sugar Bowl on the line. The reversed calls, no reviews, etc. were GUTWRENCHING. LSU thought they had won the game at least 3 times. Yet, despite all of that heartbreak, you get to the 4th OT with a chance to end the game with a TD. Your QB has had maybe his gutsiest performance of the season. Burrow was willing his team to victory both on the ground and through the air...getting up from several big hits. On first down he avoids the rush and sticks a tight pass into Moreau for 17 yards down to the A&M 8. A TD ends this roller coaster once and for all. Yet, O decides to weakly run the ball into the teeth of the defense 3 straight times without giving his QB, who has played his heart out, a shot to throw it into the endzone. The chance to drive the nail in the coffin was there...and O shrunk again.

Yes, the OC calls the plays. But the HC ALWAYS dictates the approach. A simple "go for the kill shot here" was all that needed to be said. Yet again, O coached timid...hoping to "hang on" for a win rather than seizing victory from the jaws of defeat

Tells me all I will ever need to know about him as a coach. He is a scared, gutless boy among men.

O wasn’t coaching last night. He was the running boy for Aranda to take timeouts

I’m not an O fan, but you gotta at least give him credit for the Auburn big moment.

It's weird because he projects himself as such a tough guy, yet when it's time to make a tough decision he wimps out.

O has a loser’s mentality.

The game of college football has changed.

Nobody...not even Alabama uses their defense to win games any longer.

I remember all 3 instances cited above and they are a valid criticism.

For what? Deciding to attempt the FG? That was an easy decision and the ONLY logical decision. Deciding to do anything else BUT kick the FG would have been stupid.

In the 3 instances above O was presented with a choice. Play it conservative or accept some risk for the chance at a BIG reward. Difficult choice, yes. If LSU takes a few shots in the endzone and the passes drop incomplete. Fine. That's acceptable. But to not even try when you have the chance to win the game with the ball in your hand is inexcusable. In all 3 instances a TD (very likely) wins the game. Yet, he chose to play it safe and HOPE to get a stop.

Do you really think O decided to play it safe there? That was on E. Please note that we didn't play it safe in the rest of the OT's.

So on 1st and goal from the 8 with a CHANCE TO WIN THE GAME O just puts the entire thing in E's hands? I understand a run on 1st down. But is it impossible for the HC to tell the OC, "Steve...take a shot here at the endzone?" If so, then what the frick does Ogeron actually do during the games? Run down and call TO's for Aranda?

So based upon your premise, LSU has an OC who has full and complete autonomy on not just playcalling, but the overall approach of the offense at all times, along with a DC who has full autonomy over the defense and a HC who serves as team mascot and could very well just eat hot dogs during the game?

If O can't, or is unwilling to step in and dictate the overall approach of the playcalling in a specific situation (not the actual plays called), then why is he there? Essentially, he is being paid $3.5 mill to simply watch the game like the rest of us and the outcome is completely out of his hands?

Actually "we" did, with the exception of the halfback pass that was a series too late and probably called out of necessity.

Spot on. O says he ain't backing down but he shrivels up like a limp dick when the game is there for the taking.
