You have to understand the blocking scheme

When KJ Malone straight-out whiffs blocking the man right in front of him, I don't have to be Vince frickin' Lombardi to know he blew his assignment.

My primary... actually only... concern regarding Grantham is that he's very good at confusing people. And I'm not thinking of Etling and coverages (Canada will confuse them more than they Etling). I'm thinking more of the OL and protections.

This is where Grimes' zone blocking is supposed to be effective. But, if the OL are confused Etling may see more pressure than assumed.
Grantham has done such things all his career, there's plenty of history and film available for Grimes and 4 non-freshman to be better prepared. We weren't prepared.

Wildman77 is right though, not all of that is missed assignments; It will look like that sometimes with zone block schemes.

However, you can see it in this game, and the Chattanooga game, there are late switch offs, poor technique- especially letting DL getting "into them", and bad footwork galore. We have personnel problems, some scheme/execution of that scheme problems, AND issues with fundamentals.

For years I've seen evidence of good coaching, and evidence of bad coaching at the same time with Grimes.
Bad + Bad = Bad
Good + Good = Good
Bad + Good = Bad

And incomplete coach is not a good coach.

It's not always about what class each lineman is, these guys haven't played much as a unit. O-lineman often need time to gel as a unit. Not making excuses, they definitely are gonna have to be better if this season has any chance.

I don't even know what scheme we are trying to execute.

Nothing about last Saturday makes sense.

Our OL doesn't have much depth. That could be a factor across the season but it wasn't an issue vs State.

Glorious post. To add...I guaradamntee you that our oline recruiting rankings are substantially better than miss st's defensive line.

Or their offensive line for that matter

Moffitt got a hold of them and they have regressed. The first person O should have fired should have been moffit
. Wow I thought you were smarter than this. I guess you want to hit Alabama's strength coach?

Also Donavaghn Campbell had surgery on the ankle that has kept him out. Not sure of what exactly was done or how long he will be out.

Understood.

But I don't think it's realistic to demand you have experience, talent, depth, time to gel, etc at all five positions before the OL is functional.

We have talented players. Except for one guard, they are not rookies.

I thought the line would be fine as long as we stayed healthy? That's what I was told by some suckers on here when I voiced concern over the line.

I think Malone was a 3*. The others were 4* recruits. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
