Please note the rankings you see below are from Kenpom right now. I will use the NET rankings later this year once released. Kenpom can be a little wonky right now because there's still preseason bias in effect, so keep that in mind.
(#32) (6-2) LSU
W 96-83 (#91) Rhode Island (Neutral)
W 88-79 (#106) Bowling Green
W 73-58 (#152) Missouri St.
W 76-65 (#226) Nicholls St
W 77-50 (#249) UMBC
W 90-54 (#282) New Orleans
L 82-84 (#37) @ VCU
L 78-80 (#45) Utah State (Neutral)
(#343) (0-5) Northwestern St
L 51-77 (#84) @ SMU
L 63-77 (#132) @ Texas A&M
L 74-80 (#164) Rice
L 52-79 (#222) @ Tulane
L 69-77 (#241) @ Louisiana-Monroe
LSU as of recent
We are coming into this game 6-2 on the season after a pair of wins in the last week over Missouri State 73-58 and New Orleans 90-54. The team took care of 2 fairly over-matched opponents picking up 2 home wins playing good defense in both match-ups. We were unable to get anything going from 3 in either game going 5 for 20 and 5 for 21 in each game however only turned the ball over 6 times against Missouri St and only 10 times against UNO. So we get better in one area offensively only to take steps back in another, although I dont think anyone is upset with the putting up 90 on UNO in what looked like an effortless 52 point 2nd half.
Northwestern State from the Southland Conference is straight up a bad team. They are win-less vs. Division I opponents this season with just 2 wins over on Division I teams. They weren't even very competitive in most of those losses, either. They actually have a fairly young team overall starting 3 freshmen this year and a sophomore in and out of the lineup. Mike McConathy has really seen the NWST program decline over the last several years after what was a fairly successful first 15-16 years there. The last 5 seasons, including this one, NWST has had a losing record, and it hasn't even really been that close to .500 except 1 year.
Not going to spend a long time breaking down NWST, they are simply a bad team. They are only shooting 40.6% from the floor, 29% from 3, and are among the worst teams in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency in offense AND defense per kenpom.
Northwestern St projected starters (from last game)
PF (6'7, 225) JR. Jamaure Gregg
PF (6'6, 195) SR. Chudier Bile
SG (6'2, 163) SO. Trenton Massner
SG (6'2, 178) JR. Jairus Roberson
PG (5'6, 164) SO. Brian White
Jamaure Gregg plays mostly around the rim and helps protect the rim for NWST. He averages 6 points, 4 boards and just over a block per game with a 12.0 PER on the season.
Chudier Bile is a small 4 who plays bigger than he is averaging 11 points, 8.5 boards and 1.5 blocks per game. He will fire up some 3's but not many and has a 18.7 PER on the season and is one of NWST's best players.
Trenton Massner finally started playing recently and has been pretty ineffective. He's averaging justa few per game and has a 7.7 PER onthe season.
Jairus Roberson is out there to shoot 3's pretty much averaging 8 3 point shots a game. He's averaging 9 points but only shoots 27% from 3 so far this season. His PER is only 9.9 on the season.
Brian White is a diminutive PG in stature but averages 9 points, 3.5 assists a game. His PER is 19.7 on the season and is one of NWST best players.
Northwestern St top bench players
SG (6'2, 193) SR. Laterrance Reed
SG (6'9, 200) FR. Nikos Chougkaz
C (6'7, 300) JR. Larry Owens
CG (6'2, 170) JR. John Norvel
CG (6'4, 180) FR. Jovan Zelenbaba
SF (6'6, 195) JR. Gatdoar Kueth
PG (5'10, 160) JR. C.J. Jones
I'll leave it short and sweet on their bench, half their bench has started games, they play a ton of guys and not any of them are any good particularly. Owens is friggin huge at 6'7, 300 so that's fun to watch. Reed and Chougkaz are the main contributors off the bench, assuming they even come of the bench. They list the 6'9 Chougkaz as a guard, is he? Meh, not really, but why not.
NWST is just a bad team, we should win by a lot, end of story. This is the last game before finals week I believe, we do not play again until Wednesday December 18 which will be a pretty good opponent in East Tennessee State who gave Kansas a hard time as well as beating everyone else on their schedule so far.
Projected LSU Starting 5
PF (6'6, 230) SO. Emmitt Williams - #5
PF (6'6, 240) SO. Darius Days - #0
SF (6'5, 200) JR Charles Manning Jr. - #11
SG (6'4, 205) SR. Skylar Mays - #4
PG (6'4, 205) SO. Javonte Smart - #1
Main rotational players
SF (6'9, 235) FR. Trendon Watford - #2
PG (6'2, 190) FR. James Bishop - #10
SF (6'5, 225) rFR. Aundre Hyatt - #15

Against D1 teams last 4 years:
5-20 (1 loss was to non D1, I kept in there)
9-16
2-25 (2 non D1 losses kept in there)
8-20
_____
24-81 against D1 teams, but including non D1 losses because that's embarrassing

NWST sucks. There's just not a nice way to say it. This is probably the worst team LSU will play all season. I suspect Wade scheduled them here because it comes ahead of a 10 day break between games.
I think quietly the wins over Missouri St. and UNO are going to become "better" as the year goes on. Both were picked to win their respective conferences and both could be tournament teams in March. The encouraging part is not so much that LSU won, but that LSU was able to win fairly easily. One might say "well that's what power conf. teams SHOULD do vs. mid-majors". But unless you haven't been paying attention, mid-majors have been pulling off more than their share of big upsets and close battles against the big boys. (See Evansville over #1 Kentucky. SFA over #1 Duke. Florida getting pushed to the brink by Marshall and Towson; a then ranked Xavier team barley hanging on to beat Missouri St. Auburn having to score nearly at the buzzer to beat S. Alabama; etc, etc) So far LSU hasn't let such teams get a glimmer of hope for an upset.
The second biggest takeaway is that Smart seems to be settling into his role as PG. In the last two games he notched 9 and 8 assist to only 1 and 2 turnovers. Since the Rhode Island game this offense is really starting to roll with not just great individual play, but very good team basketball. LSU is once again one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country.
Hopefully they can keep building and go into LA in a few weeks and get a good OOC win over USC. I still don't think the ceiling for this year's team is quite as high as it was for last year's group. But you could argue that even with the two losses, this year's team is playing BETTER than last year's team at the same point.

I do agree with this but I'm still not sure if this team's overall ceiling is as good as last years. But the Sec truly looks like dog shite this year so far. If we keep improving in the TOs/shot selection and overall team defense I like where we can get.

Haven't watched any of the games, but is there a reason why Watford is coming off the bench?

Looking forward to listening to this game after the Saints beat the 49ers.

Wade said he was playing the matchup last night by having Watford come off the bench, however the opposing player he tweaked the lineup for didn't end up dressing out.
The thing I'm learning is this Tiger team lulls you to sleep a little bit. Last year you had those crazy Tremont drives, alleys to Marlon, and clean up slams by KBW that brought life to the arena. Nothing about this team is flashy. They are just playing solid ball and then you look at the scoreboard and realize we are up 10-15. Maybe it's just me.

Wow. We should win this by 60. None of the starters should play more than 20 minutes unless you want to keep Smart in there for point guard duties only. Let the bench blow this team away.

Him and Manning are both basically starters, they went with Manning last game. We basically love 6 players: Days, Williams, Watford, Manning, Mays and Smart.
After that right now it's fairly slim pickings, they are trying to get Bishop and Hyatt going. Until we get Taylor back we truly only have a comfortable 6 man rotation it seems.
