So this is what tiger fans have to bitch about today? God damn, some of you are never happy. Get a fricking grip.

He's not the best but he's certainly not the worst. We should just him a talk show or a call in show and let him tell stories for a couple hours a day

Call me crazy, but I like Hawthorne. I know he makes a shiteload of mistakes but he's the "voice of the Tigers"...I'll take his call over most of the TV announcers (which I despise)..."Tigers Win...Tigers Win"..."Holy Cow"...

Started listening between top and bottom of 9th inning. Hawthorne says "this is virtually overtime action." Hello. Baseball is a nine inning regulation. It isn't extra innings until after the 9th. Gees

When you're driving and for some dumbass reason the SEC XM Channels refuse to play baseball games, you're only hope is to catch 870 am and listen to the game. Yet 10 miles later you realize you still have no clue who is batting, winning, or the count.

Excuse me, but you are saying that you can listen to Jim for 10 miles, assuming that you aren't speeding, that means for around 10 minutes and you still don't understand what is going on? 10 minutes? I'm not sure you should be driving.

Yet you're more than aware who the third sacker is because he creams his pants each time he says it.

I have no idea what this could possibly mean. Are you saying that he repeats the third baseman's name a lot? I haven't noticed that.
I'm getting more concerned that you shouldn't be driving a car.

Two pitches in a row and all he said was " you've got to be kidding me". Nothing else. What the frick do I do with that? Was it a strike and it looked outside? Was it a ball and it was down the middle? Did he swing and not get called a strike? Did a monkey start fricking the umpire mid pitch?

exactly... if it's on TV, there is no way i'm subjecting myself to jim's rambling

Nobody hates him, he just isn't a very good baseball broadcaster. People that think he is good at it either have no real understanding of the game, have never listened to real announcers, or both.

This is the truth. It is funny the most belligerent people in these threads every time are the people defending Hawthorne. People bring up legitimate criticisms and the defenders come out with the vitriol and personal attacks.

We have some miserable fricking fans. Listening to the Bama game on the way home Friday was awesome. Although I almost took out a pedicab in the French Quarter when we tied it.

You are right festus.

I had two typos on my ipad and couldn't fricking stand Jordan Jefferson as qb for LSU.
So I suppose that makes me a retard and a racist.
Luckily for me and the rest of this board we have people like you that can not only find those misspellings and typos but can point them out.. Seems it makes you feel better about yourself, which is most prob something you need.

But hey, at least I can follow along to ballgame without having the score and pitch count every 16 seconds... I'll take the good with the bad.

I always turn down the TV and listen to Hawthorn if there is no delay to contend with. The TV guys don't give me enough insite to my team.
By the way, Hawthorn corrected himself today. He said Cotten earned his forth save and then corrected it to three saves and a win.

20 minutes!!!! Of course you were at the beach which might go a long way to explaining your mental impairment.

Who is Mrs. H?

And what about the third baseman problem you alluded to earlier?

I hate how JH says Shawn(MACK)mullen and Mason CATS.
The way he says Rafe Rhymes pisses me off too.. I mean its rafe not raphe.

Plus during football games why does Jim say down across the 30 25 20 15 pushed out of bounds around the 10.. .I mean damn, like we dont know you have to run by the 25 to get to the 20.

2nd sacker? WTF JH? Its just the second baseman.

It's a slamdunk, not a flush... GEEEEEEEEEEEES

I could go on and on.

I like Hawthorne, but only because I recognize his voice. Listening to him call a game can be infuriating at times, because as the OP noted, he rarely keeps you updated with the score, and lots of times he doesn't describe the actual play on the field.

He also tends to be really negative with his inflections and comments. I didn't listen today, but I'd be willing to bet he was complaining how poorly the Tigers were playing (in a tight game with the regular season champ and top-ranked team in the country).

He does that in football too, complaining about how we're getting gashed on defense as the opponent runs several times in a row... and then they punt because the "gashing" doesn't get enough yds for a 1st down.

I'm a Hawthorne basher. He just cannot create the visual a radio play by play announcer MUST be able to do. We here on the rant who do not like Jim, and complain about him contantly, get trashed by his supporters. To those people, please tell us some examples of his ability to accurately and clearly describe what is happening on the field. It may be a tough assignment.

No. He says "sacker" instead of baseman because he thinks it is colorful, I guess.

And the defenders need to go back to the second inning and listen to the call of Foster's hit to Yastrzemski. Harry Caray was more accurate. After his stroke.
