That was Doug Thompson's line last night on the radio when Bain came in to pitch to get the last out of the game after DH'ing and going 1 (a double) for 4 batting plus a walk, 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Bain was actually more highly thought of as a SS coming out of high school and most thought he would have played on the IF at LSU

That leads to a question I have.

If Bain is the DH, can he pitch an inning, continue to DH, and then come back in a later inning to pitch? I know a pitcher can do this if he plays a position but I don't know about the DH role.

I'm pretty sure if you move from DH to mound you lose the DH and the pitcher would have to bat in that situation.

Nope, not in college baseball...he can remain in the dh spot

Austin is starting a #18 tradition voted on by the Rant game thread crew.

Yes he can. Cabrerra did it last Sunday.

I think it's that if you move your DH to any position besides P, you burn your DH.

Maybe I misunderstood, I don't think he can pitch, DH, and let someone else pitch, and then pitch again.

Yeah, I don’t think you can pitch two separate stints in the same game, even as DH. You can enter the field a second time as a position player after pitching, but then you burn the DH.

I thought Ben McDonald said last night that he almost came to bat one time while at LSU. He made it to the on deck circle but the last out was made. It was a situation where he pitched but Skip kept him in the game as a position player in case he needed him to pitch again.

Yep, in college baseball - Bain-P and Bain-DH are treated as if he were two different players. Regular substitution rules would apply -
Pinch hit for, done as a batter
Relieved from the mound, done as a pitcher
Moved from DH to field position, DH is lost and pitcher bats in that spot

I heard the same thing.

Last year during regionals I saw a hard throwing reliever (can’t remember which game) enter as a pitcher in relief and couldn’t find the strike zone, he was moved to outfield for a couple of innings, then take the mound again and pitch well

Yeah, I didn't word that quite right. You can re-enter as a pitcher if you play a position in between, but I don't think you can if you're replaced as a pitcher while continuing to be the DH. If Bain went to play 2B immediately after pitching as the DH, I think he could pitch again later (at the cost of burning the DH).

In the regional game where we swept #1 A&M at A&M, Ben pitched deep into the first game, then was moved to left field so he could be re inserted if needed. He was the on deck hitter when we made our last out. He also caught a fly in the outfield.
