Who he is is ND's winningest coach of all time. And maybe he would have gotten waxed in the NC like ND basically was under Freeman last night, but Kelly at least went undefeated and made it to the national championship when it was much harder to get in. Kelly got drilled by the best coach and dynasty in college football history losing to Saban.
Freeman's team this year would have been automatically eliminated after getting embarrassed at home by losing to Northern Illinois in any year other than this year with a 12-team playoff. And ND only beat one team that was ranked at the end of the regular season (and that was Army who was only ranked #19 in the AP).

They were about to before Ryan Day decided to go ultra conservative both offensively & defensively at 31-7.
They were dominating ND, both offensively and defensively. Why in the world would you want to stop doing what gave you the 31-7 lead, and shut it all down?
If not for the long completion on 3rd and 11, OSU would've punted and given ND a chance to tie.
It's coaching malpractice, and I'll never understand it.

Tulsa, South Florida, and Kelly’s former team Cincinnati all came into South Bend and beat his brains in.
