"There’s Nothing Balanced About 50 Percent Run, 50% Pass…That’s Just 50% Stupid.” -Mike Leach

Leach's point is that giving half (or more) of the touches to one position (RB) robs touches from half-a-dozen other gamebreakers (WR, TE, Slot). And also allows defenses to focus on a very limited number of targets.

It makes no sense why you have to run 50% of the time. Take what the defense gives you.

Mike Leach has never finished higher than ranked 10th.

Pass the ball to score. Run the ball to break your opponents will.

If you can pass the ball as effectively as we can it’s the most efficient way to get in the end zone.

True.

However, his offense philosophies have done quite nicely in College and the NFL - and at the championship level.

Yup. But, don't try that running shite against Bama.

We want to win titles at LSU, not produce massive yards and continue to finish 3rd in the West.

LSU needs to run the ball better and play defense if they are going to meet the objective.

We need to developed some sort of run game before we get to the meat of the schedule. Running game wins games/ puts the opponent away. Passing game scores points. You need both

An elite passing game beats Bama. Nothing else.

And an elite passing game will open running lanes. Otherwise, Bama will crush any running game you attempt,

I thought scoring points won games...

What does that even mean? If a team runs the spread you just lump it as a Mike Leach philosophy?

He hasn't won anything, and that offense never will.
You don't need to be 50/50, but you have to be able to run the ball and pass the ball effectively if you plan to beat the big boy defenses.

We almost agree. You have to be able to pass very effectively against Bama to have a snowball's chance in Hell of running against them.

And LSU is even money (or better) against the rest of the good SEC teams. Bama is the 800 pound gorilla that rules the SEC West.

[and Mike Leach is a flake. But OCs in the NFL and big college programs have been stealing his passing concepts for more than a decade. Some admit it, some don't.

Yet on just about every college football championship team ever, they run the ball at least 50% of the time.

Good teams run the ball not because they have to, but because they can. It’s great to be able to throw when you have to as well. There are times when the weather dictates that you run as well.

He has also taken two downtrodden programs and turned them into respectable contenders in their conference. He knows what he is talking about.

You also have to be able to block their front 4, as well as any other teams front 4, to pass effectively on anyone as well. If a defense doesn't have to blitz to put pressure on the QB, then it's going to be extremely difficult to pass the ball effectively. Our Oline hasn't been up to par most of the time, and when they are, our play calling was too predictable to beat elite teams like Bama.

To some extent, yes. But if the ball is getting out of the QBs hands in under 2.5 seconds, the D rush is greatly neutralized - no matter HOW big and athletic they are.

Well you have several players at diff positions that get touches in the run game too. I am not at all against what we are doing by the way. But i am hoping to see the run game evolve a bit The saints were deadly running the ball in this offense so it could happen.

and if that's all you can do, quick passes, then a pick 6 will inevitably happen. You can't expect to only throw the ball no more than 10 yards down the field and win.
