If you're talking about the very early stories, they reported what they were told by Israeli and airline officials at that point in time.

My neighbor made some strong statements to this effect, and I have to say I agree with him. We were standing in the street this morning, and I didn't even know about the plan where the pilot tried to commit Jihad and stabbed his copilot, but he filled me in.
He made the statement that he will not get on a plane if the pilot is a Muslim until the Muslim community openly condemns and shames the radical jihadists and Islamic terrorism become pariahs in their own community.
The comdemnation of this type of behavior should start in the Muslim community.
If the airline will not disclose the religion of the pilot, he will make assumptions (if name is Mohamed), etc.
