I'm glad Toonces got fazed out...this would've looked like shite. Don't hate the idea of a purple helmet at some point, just not with the "geaux" font.

Like the new logo a lot.
But definitely prefer the old logo to remain on the helmet.

This. New logo is great. Use it any and everywhere. Except for the helmets. Keep that the same and go back to the old jerseys.
Also, wouldn't mind going back to the old font in the end zones.

Born in 1975 in Baton Rouge. third generation tiger. i said what i had to say and its not about me. it's the bone-headed decisions being made by the university. why don't other programs do that kind of stuff? because it pisses off alumni.

They never put 'toonces' on the uniform at all. They paid a firm in Manhattan $1 million for the design around 2001, but they didn't start off by screwing with the uniform. It was only used on t-shirts and promotional items. That was a much smarter business plan than to put a soft design on the football helmet and hope that it sells merchandise. Skip Bertman was an incredibly good businessman. This move is just not smart. They better not put that sh*t on the helmet...

The original tiger head decal was actually taken from a picture taken of the original Mike the Tiger decades ago and the helmet decal was made from the picture. The photographer snapped the shot of an agitated Mike the Tiger who didn't appreciate being photographed while inside a cage. The story of how this picture came to be was published in the Advocate years ago with a shot of the original picture .
It was a cool story. That might explain why the original decal looks the way it does. It wasn't done by an artist like the most recent decal.

The new design is symmetrical and much easier to translate with an embroidery machine. Cheaper to put on shirts.
Exactly. I don't get this "cleaned up" sentiment. It was made less complex, and easier to produce. It is literally a cheaper look. It's not bad though. Only reason I give a shite is because it's closer to toonces than before, which is the direction these stupid fricking "updates" trend toward.

I like the older less clean look but that's just me.

Older is better. If you give these people an inch, they'll take a mile.
Alabama has the cleanest uniforms in college football, and they haven't changed a damn thing since integration.

Can't wait for the meltdown when this logo is at midfield in Tiger Stadium.

But not on the helmets. That old tiger was from a photo of Mike. This one is done symmetrical cartoon. Leave the pissed off Mike on the helmets!

Does the subtle difference really bother you that much?
Yes. The old logo serves to remind opponents like Riche Caldwell that we can sic a live lion on their assess at any moment.
This new logo it's just another fricking cartoon.

uh, the Saints have changed their helmet logo. The fleur-de-lis isn't even the same color. Hell, Green Bay has changed their helmet logo over the years

Unfortunately, you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to other schools/teams.
If this is really your field, you should learn what actually happens in it

The problem here is that you people care way too much about shite like this. Perhaps you need to get out more... go camping.... have a date with a girl.
It's a two inch picture, for chrissake, barely visible unless you're a few feet away from it. There is nothing sacred about it, or about the entire uniform for that matter. Purists of all stripes annoy the living shite out of me.

No. They used Phoenix Design out of New Jersey. And the dollar amount tossed around at the time by the AD was no where NEAR $1,000,000... I still hold everyone at LSU at the time responsible for looking at this group's portfolio and STILL deciding to hire these talentless frick to design our branding.

As a designer myself, I'm surprised by your take. First, you show a glaring lack of knowledge about te history of LSU's own helmet. Our helmet has not remained static since its inception. I'll grant you that it's remained FAIRLY consistent since the mid '50's if all we are talking about is the helmet color and striping, but in no way has it been unchanging since that date. Take a look...
1940's and early 50's
1956
1957
1958-1964
1965-1971
1972-1976
1977 with Helmet Stickers
Mid 1980's...
It would be far more accurate to state that LSU's helmet is constantly being tweaked than that it has remained unchanged. Truth be told, the current era we are in is the longest in the program's history without much change at all...but don;t mistake that for the helmet being Mount Rushmore. While I love the helmet and its the one I grew up with being born in 1970, the logo and lettering itself SCREAM mid 1980's design. It's the design equivalent of a Survivor or Peter Cetera song.
As for this tweak, it's what should have taken place when that shitty firm, Phoenix was hired to create the last revamp. Rather than trashing the traditional circle head logo, it should have been cleaned up and made to be more easily reproduced across various media. This was either an issue within the administration or within Phoenix, but someone completely dropped the ball there. And if they were GOING to scrap what LSU had in favor of something entirely different, at the very least it needed to not be TERRIBLE design, which it was.
