I like the idea of having a 4 man front defensive line but the traditional 4-3 doesn't really appeal to me because of the wave of air raid/ spread offenses, i feel like a 4-2-5 is the best defense to line up in. 2 CB 2 safeties and a hybrid nickel DB.

That’s basically what we’ve been running already.

That’s what I see as well. Just because K’LC’s hand wasn’t in the dirt doesn’t really change it much.

O wants more pressure and I have a feeling he and Aranda had a lot of back and forth this year about just that.

If you watched the way Clemson attacked LSU in the early going it was impressive. They had Burrow confused all quarter. Even in the second half the looks Clemson threw at Burrow were impressive.

Pelini has ties to Venables and that style of attacking defense.

In order to recruit top dlinemen you have to let them attack and pile up stats. Aranda's d was more predicated on the DL eating up blocks so the LB's could make all the plays. That's fine but it also exposes those LB's to coverage issues.

Chaisson actually dropped into coverage or as a spy in lots of situations, a hand in the dirt defensive end rarely ever drops like that. thats how id differ them.

Yeah, this is true.

I hope its a modernized 4-3 base - more multiple and dependent on down and personnel. If that is the case, I think we see something that could look more like 3-4.

Realistically if you blitz a lot you’ll eventually get burnt.

The only consistent way to win on defense is getting pressure with 4.

Clemson had a much better defense last year when they could do that.

What I noticed was when LSU went to tight, bunch formations, that's when Clemson's blitz caused problems. Clemson had 8 guys in the box on those formations and it was hard for Burrow and the line to decipher who was coming. When they went to empty or CEH in the backfield they were able to pick up the blitz better.

I think the main difference is you would have 2 ends that are close to klavons size and build (maybe a bit bigger) and can play the run and rush the passer. Our base nickel front this year had klavon playing basically at defensive end, then Lawrence shelvin and Logan (all who are defensive tackles/ nose tackles). In both fronts (ours and a 4-2-5) you have 4 guys playing the line of scrimmage, but the main difference is in the 4-2-5 you have 2 guys at ends who have the speed to be effective rushing of the edge, and 2 tackles on the inside. Instead what we ran had one edge rusher and 3 dt’s. I love Logan and Lawrence, but theyre not great pass rushers on the edge. That’s why we struggled to get effective pass rush without going to that “green team” or 3rd down package we had where we basically had 1 dt on the field. Obviously divinity being suspended hurt us a lot, too.

You don't need a 4-3 to get pressure with 4. You can rush 3 DLs every play, but the O shouldn't know who that 4th rusher is on most plays. It could be a LB (O or I) or DB (S or C). Just because you rush a DB doesn't necessarily make it a blitz.

This is something a lot of people seem to be missing around here. There’s a difference between lining up in a 4-3 (or 4-2-5) look vs. actually running a base 4-3 defense. Yeah, part of it is the DL philosophy/scheme. But personnel matter a lot as well. We have a bunch of guys that can play in a traditional DT role. I’m not sure how many guys we have that can play in a traditional DE role without gaining or losing a bunch of weight.

I never Said it was.

I’m saying you need consistent pressure with 4 pass rushers

There are 2 base D, the 4-3 and 3-4. This really depicts the number of players on the DL. The other sets such as nickel or dime and other formations are called called off of the base. You need some kind of base D to relate to make the calls very fast. In fact in a 4-3 you could make a call to use 3 DL, 2 LB and 6 DB depending on the down and situation.

Go look at our DEs when Bo was here last time

Tyson Jackson was not Mingo or Chaisson.

Chavis came in ran a 4-3 but drastically changed our DEs
