I know he was on Saban’s staff at Bama and he tutored a couple of record setting QBs at his current spot.

He's been the OC at Samford for the past 4 years. Runs a fast paced RPO system.

Russ Callaway enters his fifth season on the Samford football coaching staff, and his fourth as the squad’s offensive coordinator. Callaway specifically coaches the team’s quarterbacks.

He coached the team's receivers for his first two seasons on the staff. For the last two seasons, Callaway mentored record-setting quarterback Devlin Hodges. In 2018, Hodges earned the Walter Payton Award for the top offensive player in all of FCS football.

That season, Hodges set a school record with 4,283 yards. For his career, the three-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Year and All-American, passed for an FCS-record 14,584, breaking the old record set by Steve McNair.

As a unit in 2018, Samford's offense led the nation in passing yards per game (392.7). The offense ranked fourth nationally in total offense (515.9 ypg.), and eighth in both red zone offense (.898) and in first downs (298).

Was he fired? Or just looking for resume enhancement?

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Russ Callaway was named one of three finalists for the American Football Coaches Association’s Assistant Coach of the Year award Tuesday.

Callaway, South Dakota State’s Jason Eck and Jeremy McDowell of Southeast Missouri were the three finalists for the award. Eck was named the winner of the award.

The award, first presented in 1997, honors assistant coaches who excel in community service, commitment to the student-athlete, on-field coaching success and AFCA professional organization involvement.

Over the last few years, Callaway has coordinated one of the top offenses in the FCS. For three straight years, quarterback Devlin Hodges was named the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year, and he earned the Walter Payton Award, the highest individual honor at the FCS level, last season.

This season, the Bulldogs lead the SoCon in scoring offense (35.2 ppg.) and rank second in the league in total offense (430.0 ypg.) and passing offense (255.2 ypg.).

Callaway and the Bulldogs will wrap up the 2019 season with a game at Auburn on Saturday at 11 a.m. Central. The game can be seen live on the SEC Network.

Chris Hatcher is a Mike Leach disciple. He knows passing game very well. This guy learned under him. Hatcher and Leach use to speak on passing game when they were at UK together under Mumme. Hatcher is one smart dude. I’m sure this guy learned a lot from Hatcher.

This is what I was thinking. Seems like a candidate for a real job, not just an analyst. I’m not sure how coaching careers works though. Is this his ticket from FCS to FBS?

With all the ansylisyts hired to coaching jobs after this season, it looks like it could be a good career move for him.

They almost beat Florida State in 2018, they put up over 500 yards on them.

Finalist for assistant of the year

Seems like an odd career move, unless he has tried to move up and failed.

He must think this is his chance to get an SEC level job.

He seems like more of a candidate for the PGC job. Great resume.
