Still remember LSU upsetting A&M in baesball in 1989. A&M had only lost 5 games all year and was the regular season king of baseball that year.

Rembering the day that defined LSU baseball in 1989

This is what the ND upset of Tenn yesterday reminded me.

Thanks for posting that. I was young when the games were played. It was cool hearing them talk about it.

Meh, what lsu did was more impressive, it was all in 1 day. Notre dame had 3 days to do it. Still, good video

Hard to overstate the magnitude of yesterday's upset, because had Tennessee went on to win the NC, their argument at least on paper as the GOAT would have been intriguing.

Don't disagree, but A&M would have made the same point in 1989 (they actually had a better record) if A&M had beaten LSU once that day.

As a young kid, I remember recoding the highlights of second game on a VHS tape. Wish I could find that. Very little video exists from either of the two games.

ND slayed the Dragon, made it to Omaha, then likely to lose their HC when it’s all done. Cut throat

Was not do dissimilar from Notre Dame beating #1 overall seed FSU to make the CWS in 2002 either. Notre Dame hosted but was a 2 seed in their own regional (#1 was South Alabama). FSU entered the Super Regionals with a 59-12 record. Notre Dame beat them down in game 1 of the supers, got beat down themselves in game 2, and won a close game 3 to advance to Omaha. Lot of similarities in how they advanced this year

I believe Florida State hadn't lost in over a month heading into that Super Regional too.

Had A&M gone on to win the CWS in 1989, they would have had an argument for the best team ever too. If they win that first game against LSU, they enter the CWS with a 59-5 record. Even despite not making it to Omaha, they still finished the season ranked #2.

The genius of Skip
quote:

“We don’t have to beat them,” he told the team. “They’re going to beat themselves because the pressure’s on them.”

The same thing happened against Oregon State in the 2017 CWS. Once LSU beat them the first time it was over.
….

Fans and the team returned to the Holiday Inn. Guillot bought the hotel bar completely out of beer, and Davis bought 125 hamburgers at Whataburger.

They partied all night long around the Holiday Inn’s pool area and in a meeting room.

Thanks for posting-great memories for sure.
I had been listening to both games all day but listened to the last inning in my car in the driveway because it was after midnight and I didn't want to wake up my 4 year old daughter. Of course I knew I was going to be yelling! How enjoyable that was experiencing that event all by myself in my car. Didn't realize it at the time but beating the Faggies was the beginning of the DYNASTY!

Also reminded me of LSU upsetting Tennessee in the 2001 SEC CG. Tennessee fans had already bought plane tickets to Pasadena and came with roses to Atlanta. That game spawned the Junior and Lulu meme, and we enjoyed following their travels around the world.

Another one that doesn’t get mentioned much was ULL upsetting South Carolina in the 2000 supers. South Carolina had a similar record to Tennessee this year. I think they were 51-8 and 25-5 in conference heading into the postseason. They beat ULL in game 1 then lost 2 in a row. And this was to ULL before ULL was the respected baseball program they have become. That giant losing to a mid major might make it more shocking than the others.
