…copied from Facebook. I just want to share how awesome he was. I know my story is just one of many, but…
In the early 1990’s, Donna Taylor and I blindly drove up to Durham to see LSU at Duke basketball. We were hanging out around the Duke tent village where students were camped out for a week to get in to see Shaq and LSU. We couldn’t find tickets, and because we’d met Dale Brown a couple times, we waited around and hoped for a miracle. When LSU arrived in the team bus and started to unload, coach saw us and stopped to say hello. To Coach Brown…
Coach, when you heard about our lack of tickets, you did us one better than giving us a pair! You put us in line with the team and walked us into the back door of Cameron Indoor, proclaiming us your statisticians. We literally sat in chairs on the floor the whole game, my knees were touching the back of one of your assistant coaches! We lost (stupid Bobby Hurley) but it’s an experience I’ll never forget.
We had met you a year+ earlier when you brought us into the bus to meet the team and thank us for coming to meet the team plane at 2am after a loss. You also honored us on court for that during pregame and brought us on your weekly radio show to thank us, calling us your 2 AM club.?
Camping out for basketball tickets freshman year was so fun! Greg LaFleur used to bring us pizza, betting you had something to do with that! Greg helped me get a student job in the PMAC where I walked by your office regularly. You’d often stop me to chat, even for just 60-90 seconds. To a 19 year old, that was as awesome as it gets!
Years later, when I was doing sports apps, and your former assistant Johnny Jones was head coach, I did an LSU Basketball app modeled after our successful Miles Method app. When we met, and I reminded him of these stories, Coach Jones remembered and stopped what he was doing for 20 minutes and just told stories about how amazing you were.
I was one person, one of many you positively affected. I hope you left us knowing you affected so many people positively. R.I.P. Dale Brown
