It is one of many options available to him. Personally, I don’t think he was unaware of this and accepting one job and keeping the other is, on the face of it, a pretty slick move. What do you think?

Nothing to lose by accepting a lateral position at LSU while being able to continue to improve his “options” by coaching in the playoffs.

Maybe he makes it to LSU but after last game and another opportunity coming, it probably is less likely.

An NFL team is unlikely to take him directly today as an OC. Two games without Lane running the exact same offense would not sway most GMs and Team Presidents. He will eventually have to show more scheme development on his own beyond one that the league has proven repeatedly resistant to adopting.

Also, Weiss is going to be paid $2.5 mil/year by LSU. Only the top OCs in the league get paid that well or more, and they run NFL-friendly offenses. The league average is closer to $1 mil. Maybe he has an escape clause for the NFL that removes the buyout, but do you think he will take a pay cut to leave?

This whole line of thinking of Weiss is suddenly staying at Ole Miss when they’ve already hired an OC or heading to the NFL just doesn’t make a ton of sense.

Ole Miss won last night bc of Chambliss and Lacy. If the qb/rb swap teams, UGA wins by double digits.

So much of this is Chambliss just as so much of Brady was Burrow.

This is a terrible take. Weiss has been with Ole Miss since 2022 and their offenses have been good regardless of the QB. In 2022, they averaged 496 yards per game and 33 points. In 2023, they averaged 462 yards per game and 35 points. In 2024, they averaged 39 points per game and 526 yards per game. All of this was before Chambliss ever stepped foot on campus. Yeah, it’s all Chambliss.

Ole Miss made a bad choice in making Golding the HC instead of Weiss. Golding did not want it and that’s the only way they could have kept Weiss. This combination has proven how good they can be together the last few weeks with massive distractions. Without Weiss, they won’t be the same. Moving from an offensive team to a defensive head coach is going to be tough.

Golding is enough of a gamble, but at least he has more coaching experience. Weiss isn’t a Dan Lanning who apprenticed for years at UGA with Smart and spent some time at Bama with Saban. I respect Lane and all, but he’s not Nick Saban.

There’s no way in hell I would hand the keys of an SEC program to Weiss without some more seasoning. He still has plenty to prove because there’s a lot more to running a program than calling plays from the booth and working with the offense.

You are using way old salary numbers. Kelly makes $6 million. It would take 11-12 coordinators making $500k and the remaining all making average you suggest, $1 million, to offset that. Monken and Kafka each made $3 million, so it would take another 10-12 coordinators making $500k to offset those two numbers to get to your $1 million average. No chance two thirds of coordinators in the NFL are only making $500k.

Whatever with the semantics. The average in 2022 WAS $1 mil per year. That has gone up, but the TYPICAL salary for an OC is still in the $1 mil range for most of the league according to multiple articles on the topic. Kelly, Kafka, Monken and Moore are known to make above that. Not all salaries are public knowledge.

A guy new to the NFL running a system that isn’t going to be accepted as a direct port is unlikely to be paid a premium salary day one.

Most of the OCs who have come from college and been successful have been more experienced guys who are running systems that translate very easily. Even Joe Brady, who came from the NFL originally, bombed pretty badly in his first gig as OC. That wasn’t all his fault, but it’s a lot to ask a younger coach to handle when many of the teams looking have major issues to address or work around.

So much low IQ out there. Do they still teach “better to sit there quietly and feel dumb than to open your mouth and prove it”?

my greatest concern is over any that have a true concern over who the offensive coordinator is for an offensive coach like Kiffin. would love to have him but would never concern me. Did anyone ever express concern over who Saban's D Coordinator was? I follow the Rams in the NFL and can't even tell you who McVay's coordinator is because it is of zero concern. sure he is a nice guy and all but it's not that important like the D coaches are when you have a coach that is considered among the best on one side of the ball.

Did you watch the game last night? Kiffin wasn’t on the sidelines, it was weis doing the play calling. So, he wasn’t just calling out what Kiffin may spit out at him in games when they are together, He ran plays based on what “he” saw in film of Georgia and did a damn good job.

1 - they’re not going to pay him $7.5MM for 3yrs

2 - there’s a penalty and buyout if he’s not coaching opening day 2026

Lanning spent 1 year as a GA at Bama under Saban. Weis was an offensive assistant under his father, Saban, Sark and Kiffin before being an OC under Kiffin. Weis actually has 5 more years experience as a coordinator than Lanning had

Weis actually has more experience than Lanning did when Oregon hired him. He also apprenticed under his pops who is a pretty good offensive mind himself, considering he’s got 3 Super Bowl rings as an OC.

Ole Miss won that game because of TC’s scrambling ability and accurate (fortunate) completions at a few key moments. This is what saved OM—not the actual play call.
