Moving the Pocket

To me this could be the most important thing we do this weekend. I find it ironic that someone asked this question to Miles last night. His answer was, "We did this last week." I watched the replay and saw us move the pocket once in the 2nd qtr. Maybe I missed one but besides that we dropped straight back or rolled out the QB. If we drop straight back against Bama they will have a field day with their blitzes. We will have to double Cody and this will allow Saban to send safeties and LB's at will. QB protection has been a problem in every game, if we continue to do the same we have no shot. One time is not going to cut it Les.

Rolling out could be just as effective. Strangely, it seems Jefferson is better rolling out than dropping back.

You are right, we should roll out 20 times during the game and make alabama worst defensive unit cover only half the field, sounds smart

Moving the pocket is not rolling out idiot. Stick to baseball Mr. Know it all.

would start out dropping JJ straight back. Saban has enough film on JJ to know the guy needs the pocket rolled to be effective. I think Saban doesn't blitz in the beginning, because he knows that LSU will be trying to roll him out.

I'm baffled by what we're facing and don't really know the best way to combat it. Generally speaking, Saban is a man-coverage + blitz guy.
If we roll out Jefferson to get around that, it's a matter of how Saban will adjust and how we will change things up after.

Moving the pocket is not rolling out. Moving the pocket is sliding your protection 3-4 steps to either side. The QB can still throw to both sides because he doesn't turn his shoulders and cut the field down.

we rolled the pocket against them last yr (the game tying drive late), so it's definitely on the radar.

Well Jj needs to be rolling out then. If they simply move it a few steps to right/left, it will take too long. JJ already does about an 8-10 step drop on pretty much any pass beyond the line. Adding a few more to the side won't give him enough time to throw.

I'm not so sure I wouldn't run a couple of quick deep routes and try to hit one to open up the defense. Of course there has to be protection provided for that most likely.

If we roll out

You're a fricking idiot. My argument is that rolling out Jefferson would probably be more effective than moving the pocket.
You must have done well on the Reading Comprehension portion of the SAT....

Why cut the field down and limit us to 2 Wr's?

rolling out is not moving the pocket?
Semantics I guess.

You are correct. This game, like all games, will absolutely come down to the play of our O-line. Even if you move the pocket, you have to PROTECT the pocket.
Our boys have a monumental task on their hands with the Bama front 4....Saturday they will be tested like they never have in their entire lives. They will have to look for strength and perseverance in places within their heart that they have never looked in before...
We can talk pockets and x's and o's till the cows come home(and that's fine), but, like one of our players said the other day, Saturday will come down to who is tougher, who wants it more.
We shall see what happens, but I would never question THE HEART OF A TIGER!!!!

For one, Jefferson does better with half a field. His No. 1 problem is his decision-making, so if you limit his options, he can be more decisive.
It's also not a horrible thing to limit our options because our WRs match up incredibly well against their DBs.

I agree we need to roll him out some too. And also agree our WR's match up well with their corners but we have stood in the pocket the majority of the season and given up too many sacks, They have proven they cannot protect against ULL so please don't try against Bama.

They've also improved dramatically since then. It was obvious against Georgia they were better than against ULL. It was obvious against Florida they were better than Georgia. It was obvious at Auburn they were better than Florida... etc. etc.
They'll be fine against Saban's base defense, but might have some problems with blitz pickup.

That's what I'm saying. Saban will be able to blitz at will because they will have to double Cody even on run blitzes. We need to move the pocket toward the blitz and throw where the blitz from. They did not protect well against Tulane. The one thing I do not like about rolling out is JJ likes to run too much. We need an extra half second for him to recognize which WR to hit, because they are open, but he has to get rid of it because of protection breakdown.
