I think Cannon definitely ranks higher as an overall player than just a RB. He played Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. The part that's probably overlooked most is his role on Defense. He didn't put up extraordinary numbers on O by current standards, partly because touches were divvied up between different players. There were some really good players in those backfields too.
It's interesting no one has mentioned any of Cannon's games in this thread. The second and third games of that 1957 year were the most productive for All-Purpose Yards (numbers came from LSU Football Statistics):
vs. Alabama - 208 APY, 2 TDs; 3 Punts, 99 Yards
vs. Texas Tech - 225 APY, 2 TDs; 31 Pass Yards; 5 Punts, 203 Yards
You can't really judge Cannon's performances in full without taking his role on Defense into account, though.
I'm sure there were a lot of dominating performances in the Past that are unfortunately kind of lost to History.
More recent players and O skill players are favored. There have definitely been some dominant performances by offensive linemen and cornerbacks, but that type of dominant play is more about taking your opponent out of the game, so it often goes unnoticed. I remember La'el Collins and Dillon Gordon having some dominant games blocking, but that doesn't have the same impact as when skill players dominate and put up big numbers.

Kevin Faulk vs Houston. Single handedly won the game.

Carlos Carson has one receiving record which will likely never be broken. His first 6 receptions as a Tiger, in 1977 ALL went for TDs. Pretty incredible, especially when you think that the Tigers had a mediocre passing game during his time as wide receiver at LSU.

Reed vs bama will always be my favorite

Josh Jasper vs Mississippi State in 2010.

Joe Burreaux vs pretty much anybody in 2019 - but mainly OU and Georgia in the postseason. I can't watch the play enough where he juked the Georgia defender 2-3 times and then landed that long pass to Jefferson.
Honorable mention: Cade York vs Floriduh last year. Twenty-seven seconds left, nails a 57-yarder in the rain and fog to kick the Gayterds out of the Playoff Four - in their own stadium. Epic! His third field goal of the game. (Okay, it may not have been 'dominant' but sure as hell was clutch - and fun! So, I had to show him some love here.)

All of the ones that came to mind have already been mentioned and I don't want to be redundant, so I'll dig deep and give one for special teams. Jarvis Landry in 2011 against Auburn was destroying guys on returns. Even Danielson noted that the Auburn players were visibly afraid to touch the ball because he was just laying guys out.

CEH vs Alabama 19. He was unstoppable that game.

Most either don't know or don't remember that in that O.Miss game where his punt return provided LSU with the winning points, Cannon made the last 2 tackles on the goal line to save the game. O.Miss had first & goal inside the 5 yr line & Cannon & Rabb teamed to stuff the Rebs on 4 straight plays, the last 2 from the 1 yd line. Coach Deitzel always said that what was the most remarkable aspect of that game was that Cannon was able to play practically 4 quarters in almost 100% humidity. But because it involved humiliating the Bear, Rohan's almost 700 yrds passing game against bama in Legion Field is my #1 performance by an LSU player.

Cannon was an absolute beast, I don't think most on here are able to fathom what an athlete he was, in most all of these threads about who's the goat of all LSU footballs players, all these kids know is who they've seen in their brief time watching LSU football, Cannon could not only hang in any era, he would dominate in any era, once in a lifetime specimen

What year was this? I missed that game, and Rohan would have been about 4 years old when Bear Bryant was still alive! Talk about a prodigy: Rohan Davey, the Mozart of college football!
