More evidence that declining attendance is not just a problem at LSU

I thought about putting this on the SEC Rant, but since there has been so much discussion of this issue on this board, I decided to bring it here instead. This article, from the Louisville Courier-Journal, discusses declining attendance at UK basketball games. There was an earlier article (linked to this one) dealing with the same problem at Louisville. I think the following quote is spot on:
In other words, the ordinary fan who is passionate about his/her team is being priced out of the market. Interestingly, UL recently announced a reduction in basketball ticket prices for next year. This could become a trend nationwide as the attendance problem grows more severe.

Kentucky’s situation is consistent with trends that have touched most major sports in recent years. As prices have risen, and the game day experience has become more about amenities and more narrowly aimed at high net worth individuals, more cost-conscious consumers have increasingly chosen to follow their teams from a distance, saving wear, tear, time, money and aggravation while forsaking the fleeting pleasure of Being There.

Millennials have the attention span of ADD hummingbirds.

We now have an entire generation of young adults who have spent 10 yrs of their lives bent over a smart phone screen instead of being outside hunting, fishing and playing sports. Many of these people care nothing about attending a sporting event.

I wouldn't argue with your observation, but many long-term older fans are also bailing. The problem is bigger than the predilections of younger people, although that certainly plays a role.

If they made food/beverages & parking cheaper you would get more people going to games again. The rampant greed & gouging of the fans across pro and college sports has finally reached its tipping point. Why deal with ridiculous ticket/food/parking prices and traffic when I can watch the game in high def on my 60” Samsung, not have to wait in line for beer or the bathroom and make my own food? All at a fraction of the cost and frees up my day to do other things

Here's a better summary of the article: the average fan is being priced out of attending. Oh and the game day experience at most football games (college and NFL) has become stale/watching it on tv is a better viewer experience.
That being said, I love going to Tiger Stadium. Not going to pretend that it doesn't have it's downsides and can be expensive.

I'm all in favor of shrinking the stadium seating if need be. Several schools have talked about it, most notably Florida.
The older people are bailing and many of the younger people aren't on board to begin with. I wonder what season ticket sales will look like in 20 years when a lot of the old timers have died and passed their season tickets on to family members who aren't as invested emotionally and decline to renew them.

Its kind of hard for me to Instagram my ducks and fish if I don't have my phone.
Its a cost/benefit analysis for some people. The cost, both monetary and ancillary, are too high for people who have air conditioning, a full fridge of beer, 70" 4K TV and a clean bathroom.

This is perfectly worded by Muffins
Gators coach Dan Mullen wasn't asked directly about the crowd, but he brought it up anyway, repeating one of the themes of his offseason speaking tour.
"When we sell out the stadium, we win a championship," Mullen said. "It doesn't go the other way."

Your takeaway from the article’s assertion that normal fans being priced out was that millennials have short attention spans? Lulz

You're right, all 23 to 37 year olds have a short attention spans and it's killing sports. /s
There are many factors, attention spans included, but high prices are a bigger reason for poor attendance in my opinion.

Color me shocked that a guy who posts on a message board dedicated to sports is an exception to my statement.

We have the means and time to attend a lot of games. But the watch parties are just a whole lot more fun to me.

This is it in a nutshell. HDTV has changed many forms of entertainment and how people absorb it.

Hilarious, but there's some truth to it.

Pretty much one or the other.. or a combination of both.
Now downvote until the arrow disappears for all I care.

It became less about sports and more about money
