Here is the thing, Harry Coleman tackles great in traffic which is what LBs primarily do. As a safety when was on an island he'd always go for the kill shot, but when I saw him closer to the football he was very effective as a tackler. LB was his position in high school and he probably made the transition back with relative ease.

Good point.

Coleman should do fine at LB, plus his time in the secondary should have given him coverage skills beyond those of our other LB's.

Heh, now that Coleman is closer to the action, we will see alot more break ups in the other team O-Line. When he was at saftey, he always came too late, he brough heat and pressure, but he didn't wrap up, he just wanted to killshot the ball carrier.

As long as it's our best players on the field that's all that matters. Last year had way too much crazy substitution going on.

if they are startin Cutrera at MLB, they must see something,

Why don't all of you Linebacker coaches personally send Chavis an e-mail and ask him why Cutrera is starting in the middle. Spring practice is over and I'm sure he'll enlighten yall a little. Cutrera is starting because I'm sure he wants somebody to call the defensive signals ON THE FIELD and make sure everybody is on the same page, much like Luke Sanders did. You don't need a great athletic specimen at middle linebacker, just somebody who knows the defense and all the calls. Didn't we win a NC with Sanders in the middle? Don't have to be super fast there, just make sure all the "fast athletes" know what the F they're doing. Go ahead and ask Chavis, I bet that's what he'll tell you. You saw what happened to our defense last year after Sanders and Steltz graduated. The glue dissolved and the whole thing fell apart without any real leaders on the field. Even with the supreme mess that Mallveto CREATED, it wouldn't have been half as bad with just a little leadership and intelligence from a few people. The Cutrera and Sanders types provide that and it's invaluable. The truth sometimes hurts, huh?........

Racist

BTW, you can call it what you want, but Coleman isn't starting at LB. LSU is just going to a base Nickle package and Coleman is the S/NB.

Chavis LOVES Cutrera. That's not speculation, it's fact based on what I have been told. The perception that he is slow is wrong. His REACTIONS have been slow in the past. There's a big difference.

Chavis has the whole group reading and reacting.....not THINKING. All indications are that this defense will be SICK. Cutrera and Riley are in, with Coleman and Sheppard battling.

Um, no, actually we didn't. Beckwith started in the middle in 07. And Sanders was definitely our weakest link on that D. He wasn't really known as a "smart player" or leader like you are suggesting. Steltz was, but not Sanders.

Just find our best players and leave'em on the field. Great players miss tackles, plays, etc but they also make plays and make-up for their mistakes.

Leaving them on the field together builds chemistry so vital to season long success - and hopefully some dominance along the way.

FWIW I think Cutrera is a smart football player with a lot of heart and a great motor.

No, Beckwith played the middle and gave all the calls in 07.

He didn't hold a poll amongst Ranters to determine who starts?

Who do these coaches think they are?
