Miles responds to Michael Cauble's criticism of the offense, and fear of passing

We were 7 of 14 in the bowl game. Okay, if you want to go back and look, we were a 48% passing team. 48% of the time we threw incompletions. That’s not good enough. Basically, when you’re not good enough throwing it, for whatever the reason is, and you’re ripping off runs that are going up and down the field, you tell me what you think I ought to do now, Cauble. I think the opportunity to call plays that wins the game for us is what we got to do. Period.

Now, we want to throw it. We have talented receivers. We would think that we’re through the QB misery, development if you will, and get to a point this spring, where we will throw the ball a ton this spring. We’ll see who comes out of spring, then we’ll go into fall ball and there will be competition that will tell it, and I would think that we’ve improved tremendously.

The overt problem with this explanation is that we weren't "ripping off runs going up and down the field" against teams with above average defenses, such as Alabama and Arkansas. Yet, even when that didn't work, we obstinately stuck with it.

4 straight passes in OT.

We had no other choice, I think it is terrible we didnt but if you cant understand Les and his explanation I dont know what to say....you cant just throw it to throw it when you cant throw it.......
The calls are not the problem, the lack of a passing game is...they are just managing the game the best they can at that point.

I seem to have heard this somewhere before

Just when i finally forget about this and get over it...

So you run it to run it even when you can't run it instead?

The only logical explanation regarding the quarterbacks is, "They aren't who we thought they were."

sounds like Les has heard enough of this POV

I can't believe that Miles is all feisty about a reporter actually asking a legit question. 7 of 14 passing in the bowl game? Is that the actual numbers? That has to be the lowest passes attempted by any team in the entire bowl season. Then he wants to get snarky just because a guy asked him a question about it?

Jefferson is still improving

It's college football. He's acting as a motivational leader trying to will his underperforming QBs to be better. It's not like he can just get a new qb in a trade or free agency.

We’ll see who comes out of spring, then we’ll go into fall ball and there will be competition that will tell it

Miles also said Harris would play the last four games, so there's that. We'll probably practice pounding the rock during the Spring

the problem isn't that Les doesn't call enough pass plays. that is the wrong question. and Les himself acknowledges that they just can't pass it good enough to warrant more throws. That makes perfect sense and I agree with him.
The Questions that SHOULD BE ASKED OF MILES is why the hell can you not develop more of a passing game? don't you think the passing game could be more effective in modern day football if you ran a different type of offense that presents easier throws and spreads the field out more than a lot of the 1 and 2 man routes you currently run?
Those questions need to be addressed. Miles knows they suck at passing, just like we all do. But does he know WHY they suck? That remains to be seen

Exactly. Don't be a little bitch. That was something a high school watched does to a smart arse kid.
What a joke.
What a joke.

Try the qb that is 55% at completing passes

No but he can hire a damn offensive coach who isn't his buddy, under 50, and use to working with QBs like Joe Flacco and Drew Beldsoe for goodness sake.
What we need is a QB guru, period.

Maybe he could have, like, tried playing a different QB?
The obstinacy is sticking with a guy who you know with a certainty can't be trusted to throw. TRY the other guy for a few series. If he's worse, then fine, put the other guy back in.
I understand where Miles is coming from and that he was in a difficult position with the QB play, but he shares responsibility for poor management of the position too, and it troubles me that he can't seem to recognize or acknowledge that.
