I though Saban proved himself a defensive whiz once again. Kept us out of the end zone and below ten points. If I tell you LSU only scores 9 points in a game, you probably think LSU lost.

On offense, different story. Trent killed us with those short passes. Why didn't they keep using him? We never really stopped that play. Saban made his mistakes on offense. Should've just kept punting, pinning us deep, and trusting his defense, which was kicking our arse. I think most of you know what Bear would've done. Hell, bear might have actually quick kicked, which he did until he retired.

Bama missed from 44, 50, 49 (blocked), an 52 (OT). Leaving aside the 52 yard attempt in OT, which never had a prayer, Saban would have been smarter to punt and play field position.

Well, certainly you attempt the 44 every time - you're not going to punt from the 27 yard line. The 50 and 49, that's around the 32, 33 yard line - still dicey on punting - maybe you go for it more in that zone, particularly when your K is having a bad day, or if weather conditions disfavor those attempts.

I just think their players were more wound up and their kickers are not excellent in any event. Bama only punted a couple of times.

Why is it so hard to comprhend that you go for it from the 27 if your kicker sucks???

First off, the field position argument was a general point that Saban conceded a lot of yards in a defensive battle. Saban could have just as easily gone for it on 4th and 7 on that first series. Wing had a 22 yard punt last night, although it was unintentional. I've witnessed several punts from inside the 35 yard line, some of them successfully done. IIRC, Miles did it this season.

LSU punted from the 38 and 39. 5 yard difference, which isn't much.

Difference is CLM knew it was a long shot to make those FG, and knew that he could pun them inside the 5-10. Saban should have known his FG kicker would miss at least 50% of those considering what his FG kicker has made all year....or should I say what he's missed this year.

It really is hard for a lot of people to realize that Miles is one of the best coaches in college football?

punting or kicking from that distance is the wrong move. statistically, you go for it. without question

saban had 4th and longs, though. i think the stats say you still go with it. also, our offense was horrible, so what was bama losing?

But it is when you talk about %s of completing 50 yard FGs and 55 yard FGs in college. Unless you have an exceptional kicker, you attempt lots of 50s and you do not attempt lots of 55s.

That 5 yards might as well be 20 for FGs in college.

Depends on the strength of their offense and your defense IMO.

I agree with this.

Just wanted to point out we did punt inside their 40 twice, which Bama had the option to do. We could have gone for it as well, but considering the game, I'd rather play field position and defense.

Man...that's a bit of a reach I'd say! The game went to over time , Saban may be an a-hole , but he's a good coach and called a good game IMO.....Brad Wing , and Allemond made the difference IMO , not coaching.

Couldn't agree more.........this was a field position game and Saban did not coach it that way.......Miles did.

Saban also tried the trick play which resulted in the interception. Poor call when I first saw it.

Better coaching decisions last night...no brainer

I never focused on that until you mentioned it. No trick plays from the "Mad Hatter", but Saban tried it. Very interesting.

We tend to put coaches in boxes; Saban gets to be a calculating genius while Miles is the mad genius who lucks his way into victories. Neither is totally true. Miles makes a lot of his own luck, and Saban makes his share of mistakes.

Couldn't have said it better myself......

i don't classify a reverse or a pass from the wildcat a trick ply, but that's me

I agree. It was more stupidity than trickery-- but there are tons of threads on this topic.

Yeah les made the right adjustment early to the game plan, and saban felt he had an advantage on offense, which they did until they hit the brick wall on our 30 yard line. The trick play was actually not that bad of a call though, eric reid just made one hell of an athletic and smart play

And I would normally agree, SFP, but if you only run 1 or 2 plays out of the wildcat in a game, and the only 1 of significance is a WR pass to the goal line, that might cross the line into "trickery".

If they ran even as few as 10 to 12 plays out of the wildcat, I couldn't see how it would be considered a trick play.

In this case, I'm slightly on the "trick play" side of the argument.

Just now watching the CST replay and you get a lot more info from Len/Greg than CBS. I didn't realize that Bama won the initial toss and opted to receive the ball. Another poor decision from Nick in a defensive battle.
